Netflix has unveiled the trailer for Danny Boyle’s upcoming biographical drama Ink, which chronicles Rupert Murdoch’s acquisition and transformation of the British newspaper The Sun. The film stars Guy Pearce as Murdoch, Jack O’Connell as The Sun editor Larry Lamb, and Claire Foy in a fictionalized role.
Written by James Graham, Ink is adapted from his acclaimed 2017 stage play of the same name. The story is set in 1969, when Murdoch purchased The Sun at a time when the newspaper was struggling financially and losing readers. The acquisition marked Murdoch’s entry into Britain’s fiercely competitive newspaper industry and became a defining moment in his media career.
The newly released trailer focuses on Murdoch’s ambitious efforts to turn the failing publication into a newspaper that could capture the attention of a mass audience. Rather than simply reporting the news, Murdoch wants The Sun to make readers “feel alive” when they pick it up in the morning.
As the trailer unfolds, it explores the relationships between Murdoch, Lamb and the wider team working to reinvent the paper. It also highlights the unconventional marketing strategies and editorial ideas they use in an attempt to make The Sun more appealing to the British public.
The newspaper would eventually become known for its populist approach, sensationalist coverage and controversial reporting, helping reshape Britain’s newspaper landscape while also generating considerable criticism and controversy. Ink appears to explore the people and decisions behind that transformation.
Pearce takes on the central role of Murdoch, while O’Connell portrays Larry Lamb, who became editor of The Sun after previously working as an editor at The Daily Mail. Foy, meanwhile, plays a fictional character rather than a specific historical figure. Her character is reportedly an amalgamation of several female reporters who worked at the newspaper during the period.
Ink will receive a limited theatrical release beginning December 11, 2026, before premiering globally on Netflix on January 8, 2027.
