Ruby Puts Her Heart on Trial With Immersive New EP ‘Verdict’

Ruby has unveiled her new immersive EP, ‘Verdict’, a seven-track project that transforms the fallout of a toxic relationship into a courtroom drama. Rather than simply telling her story, Ruby invites listeners to examine the evidence, hear both sides and ultimately deliver their own verdict: guilty or not guilty?

‘Verdict’ is out now on all major streaming platforms via APOLLO Distribution.

From the opening track, ‘Court in Session’, Ruby immediately establishes the world of the EP. Across the six chapters that follow, she presents a deeply personal journey through betrayal, anger, doubt, resentment and, eventually, acceptance. Each song becomes another piece of evidence, placing the listener inside a trial where Ruby is both witness and defendant.

“I present my evidence to you, the public,” explains Ruby. “Once you’ve listened to the entire EP, it’s your decision: am I guilty or not guilty?”

Written during what Ruby describes as the lowest point of her life, Verdict was born from the aftermath of a relationship she believed had cost her everything. The project captures the emotional highs and lows of its breakdown, while allowing Ruby to explore the anger, confusion and contradictions that come with walking away from something toxic.

Sonically, Verdict sits firmly within indie rock, combining guitar-led arrangements, atmospheric production and Ruby’s direct, emotionally charged songwriting. The sound shifts between energetic, rock-driven moments and more stripped-back passages, mirroring the instability of the relationship and the constantly changing emotions that follow its collapse.

There is anger and sadness, but also humour, attitude and plenty of bite. Ruby doesn’t attempt to tidy up the story or soften its messier moments.

The case begins with ‘Judge and Jury’, a punchy pop-rock statement that sets the tone for the trial. ‘Kasey’ then turns its attention towards the other woman in the relationship, pairing hauntingly sweet melodies with layered vocals and a more vulnerable side to Ruby’s storytelling.

‘Wrong Guy’ shifts the energy again, capturing the all-too-familiar temptation to reconsider an ex, before reminding yourself exactly why the relationship ended in the first place.

On ‘Body Double’, Ruby takes aim at the replacement who appeared just 48 hours after being told they “couldn’t live without you”. Fast-paced, wordy and unapologetically petty, the track showcases Ruby’s playful side while delivering one of the EP’s most energetic moments — and a particular live favourite.

As the emotional journey begins to turn, ‘Elastic Dreams’ brings a sense of acceptance. Its upbeat production and catchy lyrics reflect a growing perspective: sometimes things fall apart without destroying you in the process.

Finally, the case reaches its conclusion with ‘Verdict’. Having heard Ruby’s evidence, the listener is left to make the final judgement for themselves.

Self-described as a “lanky redhead who writes songs directly from your diary pages,” Ruby brings an unfiltered and often witty perspective to Verdict. While the EP is rooted in her own experiences, its themes are universally recognisable — betrayal, second-guessing, anger and the struggle to understand a relationship once it has ended.

Ruby may have presented the evidence, but she leaves the courtroom decision firmly in the hands of the listener.
