After years of speculation, the boys are finally getting back together. Netflix has officially confirmed that The Inbetweeners 3 is now in production, with the original cast returning for another big-screen adventure.
Simon Bird is once again stepping into the role of Will McKenzie, with James Buckley returning as Jay Cartwright, Blake Harrison as Neil Sutherland and Joe Thomas as Simon Cooper. The reunion marks the return of the four central characters more than a decade after they last appeared together in The Inbetweeners 2.
Netflix has also released a short teaser giving fans their first glimpse at the new movie. While it doesn’t reveal any details about the plot, it delivers a familiar piece of nostalgia: Simon’s iconic yellow Fiat Cinquecento.
The teaser begins with a garage door opening to reveal the recognisable car. The four friends approach the vehicle before climbing inside, with Simon taking his familiar place behind the wheel. Naturally, the car doesn’t immediately cooperate, but eventually the engine fires up and the group drives away.
The final shot provides the biggest confirmation of all, with the number “3” appearing in the dirt across the rear window.
The new film will continue the story of the hugely popular British comedy franchise rather than rebooting it. Original creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris are also returning, with the pair writing and directing the third movie. Production is currently underway in the UK.
The Inbetweeners originally debuted on E4 in 2008 and quickly became one of Britain’s most popular sitcoms. The series followed Will, Jay, Neil and Simon as they attempted to navigate school, relationships, parties and the various humiliations that came with being teenagers.
The show’s success eventually led to The Inbetweeners Movie in 2011, which followed the four friends on a disastrous holiday to Malia. The Inbetweeners 2 arrived in 2014 and sent the group to Australia for another chaotic adventure.
Now, more than a decade after the second movie, the four friends are back together.
Netflix has yet to reveal the storyline for The Inbetweeners 3, and there is currently no confirmed release date. For now, the return of the original cast and creative team is enough to get longtime fans excited about seeing Will, Simon, Jay and Neil embark on another series of questionable decisions.
With production officially underway, more details about the film are expected to emerge as Netflix continues work on the highly anticipated sequel.
