Jake Gyllenhaal finds himself caught between romance, grief and something far more sinister in the first trailer for Remain, the upcoming supernatural thriller from filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan.
The film brings together two very different storytelling worlds, with Shyamalan teaming up with bestselling romance author Nicholas Sparks. The pair developed the original story together, with Sparks subsequently writing the 2025 novel Remain, while Shyamalan adapted the story for the screen and directed the movie.
Gyllenhaal stars as Tate Gordon, a reclusive architect who relocates to a small coastal community in an attempt to rebuild his life. There, he encounters Wren, played by Bridgerton star Phoebe Dynevor, and the two quickly develop an intriguing connection.
At first, the trailer presents Remain as an atmospheric romantic drama. Tate and Wren share playful and intimate moments as he begins to open up to her. But, as expected from a movie carrying Shyamalan’s name, things soon take a decidedly darker turn.
The trailer begins revealing strange occurrences surrounding Wren, with Tate increasingly questioning exactly who she is and why she seems to be appearing in his life. What initially appears to be a promising new relationship gradually becomes something much more unsettling.
Wren’s mysterious nature appears to be at the heart of the film, with the trailer suggesting that Tate may be dealing with forces that extend well beyond the ordinary. The supernatural elements are deliberately kept vague, leaving plenty of room for Shyamalan to deliver the kind of revelation audiences have come to expect from his movies.
The official story follows Tate as he moves to a small coastal town to work on his latest architectural project. His encounter with Wren pulls him out of his isolation and into the middle of a deadly mystery surrounding the community.
Joining Gyllenhaal and Dynevor are Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty and Jay O. Sanders, alongside Tracy Ifeachor, Hannah James, Caleb Ruminer, Kieran Mulcare and Maria Dizzia.
Shyamalan produces the film alongside Ashwin Rajan, Marc Bienstock and Theresa Park, while Sparks serves as executive producer.
Remain is scheduled to arrive in Australian cinemas on February 4, 2027, with its U.S. theatrical release following on February 5.
With a combination of Nicholas Sparks-style romance and M. Night Shyamalan’s trademark supernatural mystery, Remain could offer one of the more unexpected cinematic collaborations of 2027.
