The first trailer for The Mosquito Bowl has arrived, offering a closer look at Peter Berg’s upcoming sports war drama starring Nicholas Galitzine and Bill Skarsgård. Based on Buzz Bissinger’s acclaimed book, the film follows a group of college football stars who trade their athletic careers for military service during World War II.
Set after the attack on Pearl Harbor, The Mosquito Bowl follows four of America’s top college football players as they put their fame and promising futures aside to enlist in the U.S. Marines. As they prepare for the invasion of Okinawa, they take part in a legendary football game that would become one of the final moments of normalcy for many of the players involved.
The trailer moves between the players’ lives on the football field, their military training, and their experiences as Marines. Despite being thrown into an unfamiliar and increasingly dangerous environment, their bond as teammates remains at the heart of the story.
Football celebrations and moments of camaraderie are contrasted with increasingly intense military sequences, highlighting the dramatic shift from college sports to the realities of war. As the threat of combat grows, the game they play becomes more than just a football match — it represents a final connection to the lives they left behind.
Galitzine stars as John McLaughry, while Skarsgård portrays Bob Baumann. Ray Nicholson plays Tony Butkovich, with Tom Francis appearing as David Schreiner.
Berg directed The Mosquito Bowl and co-wrote the screenplay with Mark L. Smith. The movie is adapted from Bissinger’s The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II, which chronicles the real-life story behind the historic game played by servicemen shortly before the Battle of Okinawa.
The project also reunites Berg with several key collaborators from Friday Night Lights. Bissinger serves as an executive producer, while Brian Grazer is among the film’s producers. Explosions in the Sky, known for their work on Friday Night Lights, are also providing the film’s score.
Production took place in Australia, with filming locations including Queensland and northern New South Wales.
The Mosquito Bowl is scheduled to arrive in select theaters on October 30, 2026, before making its streaming debut on Netflix on November 25, 2026.
