Prime Video has unveiled the first trailer for Mike Flanagan’s upcoming Carrie series, a modern television adaptation of Stephen King’s iconic debut novel. The series will revisit the terrifying story of Carrie White, a bullied teenager whose life takes a horrifying turn after she discovers she possesses supernatural abilities.
The new series marks the latest adaptation of King’s 1974 novel, which has previously been brought to the screen in several forms. This version stars Summer H. Howell as Carrie and introduces a number of changes designed to bring the story into a contemporary setting.
The trailer opens with Carrie arriving at school for the first time after being homeschooled. Unfamiliar with the social dynamics and modern education system, she struggles to fit in and attempts to make friends with her classmates. However, her innocence quickly makes her a target for ridicule and bullying.
Things take a disturbing turn following a gym class, when Carrie experiences her first period and panics. Rather than receiving support from her classmates, she is humiliated as the students record the incident and share it online. The sequence highlights how the new series will incorporate modern technology and social media into Carrie’s already traumatic experience.
As the trailer progresses, viewers get brief glimpses of Carrie discovering her telekinetic abilities. Her powers soon become increasingly difficult to control, setting the stage for confrontations with both her classmates and her mother.
Howell leads a large ensemble cast that includes Samantha Sloyan, Siena Agudong, Alison Thornton, Joel Oulette, Josie Totah, Arthur Conti, Thalia Dudek, Amber Midthunder, and Matthew Lillard. Michael Trucco, Crystal Balint, Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, Tim Bagley, and Heather Graham are also set to appear as guest stars.
Fans will have an opportunity to see the series early at Fantastic Fest in September. Flanagan is directing four of the show’s eight episodes and serves as showrunner. He is also part of the writing team alongside Elizabeth Padden, Justina Ireland, Dani Parker, Elan Gale, Alexandra Magistro, and Rebecca Leigh Klingel.
Flanagan executive produces the series with Trevor Macy and Stephen King. With its modern setting, expanded ensemble, and Flanagan’s signature horror style, the new Carrie series looks set to offer a fresh take on one of King’s most enduring stories.
