A first look at Anna Kendrick and Seth Rogen’s upcoming comedy-drama Babies has been unveiled, offering audiences a glimpse at a film that explores a question many women find themselves asked throughout their lives: “Baby or no baby?”
According to an exclusive first look shared by Vanity Fair, Kendrick and Rogen appear in a new still from the film as their characters, Annie and Aaron, tend to a young girl in a washroom. The couple look visibly concerned as the child cries, hinting at the unexpected challenges they will face throughout the story.
Director Lauren Miller Rogen said the film was inspired in part by her own experiences with the societal expectations surrounding parenthood.
“I, as a woman, obviously have been asked that over and over and over again,” Miller Rogen said. She explained that the question was something she had spent considerable time thinking about, exploring in therapy and discussing with others before deciding she had something meaningful to contribute to the conversation.
Babies follows Aaron and Annie, a happily married couple who have been together for 17 years. Despite their long relationship, the pair remain uncertain about whether they want to have a child.
Their lives take an unexpected turn when a recently divorced friend, played by Kate Berlant, moves into their home with her four-year-old daughter. Living alongside a young child forces Aaron and Annie to confront the realities of parenthood and reconsider their own feelings about having a baby.
According to the film’s IMDb synopsis, the story follows “a couple grappling with parenthood” whose lives are turned upside down when their friend and her toddler move in after a divorce, giving them an unexpected crash course in raising a child.
The movie also draws inspiration from real-life events. Miller Rogen revealed that, around 11 years ago, she and Seth Rogen had a close friend who moved in with them along with her toddler. The experience gave the couple an unexpected introduction to what it was like to have a child in their home.
“All of a sudden, we were not parents, but we were closer to being parents than we had ever been in a lot of ways, in just having a child in our house full-time,” Miller Rogen recalled.
In Babies, Seth Rogen stars as Aaron, while Anna Kendrick plays Annie. The ensemble cast also includes Dan Stevens, David Strathairn, Sharon Stone, Ed Helms, Zach Cherry, Ashley Park, Issa Rae, Kate Berlant and Dey Young, among others.
With its blend of comedy, relationship drama and personal experiences, Babies looks set to explore the complicated—and often deeply personal—question of whether becoming a parent is the right choice for everyone.
