Prime Video is putting a fresh spin on the zombie genre with I Would Rather Die, a new coming-of-age series that combines teenage romance, dark comedy and undead chaos.

The newly released trailer introduces Archie, a high school outcast whose already complicated teenage years take an unexpected turn when he is bitten by a zombie at a local mini-mart. Rather than simply becoming another member of the undead, Archie finds himself caught up in a much bigger mystery threatening his hometown.

Joining Archie on his bizarre journey are his goth best friend and his platonic crush. Together, the unlikely trio attempt to uncover what is really happening while trying to prevent an evil scheme from triggering an apocalypse in Mendoza, a seemingly ordinary provincial town in Mexico.

Their problems extend far beyond zombies. The series’ offbeat premise also throws them into the middle of a vitamin-selling pyramid scheme, encounters with an extreme religious group and conflicts with a school bully.

The trailer’s combination of teenage awkwardness, romance, humour and zombie horror has already sparked comparisons to the 2013 romantic zombie movie Warm Bodies, starring Nicholas Hoult. Like that film, I Would Rather Die places a youthful relationship at the centre of a zombie story while using comedy to play with familiar horror conventions.

However, the new series appears determined to take its own irreverent approach to the genre, with its Mexican setting and unusual collection of characters adding another layer to the story.

The premise is summed up with the playful tagline: “Between being a teen and being a teen zombie, growing up has never been this hard.”

For fans of zombie stories looking for something lighter and more character-driven, I Would Rather Die could offer a fresh alternative to the more serious end-of-the-world fare that has dominated the genre in recent years.

Some viewers may find the similarities to Warm Bodies hard to ignore, but the series will ultimately have the opportunity to establish its own identity when the full story arrives.

I Would Rather Die premieres on Prime Video on October 2, 2026.
