A new three-part documentary series featuring previously unheard audio recordings of Diana, Princess of Wales, speaking candidly about her life, relationships and the royal family is set for an international launch.
Diana Unheard has been picked up for worldwide distribution by Cineflix Rights and is set to be among the company’s major factual launches at MIPCOM in Cannes.
Produced by UK independent production company Love Monday TV, the series draws on hours of secretly recorded conversations between Diana and her friend James Colthurst in 1991. The recordings later became the foundation for Andrew Morton’s landmark biography Diana: Her True Story.
Love Monday TV worked with Morton and Colthurst to gain access to several hours of the original tapes. Both men also feature in the documentary, offering context around the recordings and their significance.
The tapes provide an unusually intimate glimpse into Diana’s thoughts and experiences. She speaks openly about her marriage to then-Prince Charles and his relationship with Camilla, as well as other members of the royal family, including Prince Andrew.
The series arrives amid renewed public interest in Diana and the British monarchy. It also comes as the royal family and Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, have been publicly at odds over his memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, which explores her life and death.
According to Love Monday TV, Diana Unheard aims to move beyond the familiar portrayal of Diana as simply a victim of her circumstances.
“In making Diana Unheard, we wanted to challenge the narrative that has too often portrayed Diana, Princess of Wales simply as a victim of her circumstances,” said Kerene Barefield, Creative Director at Love Monday TV.
“This is Diana not as a passive victim of events, but as a woman taking control of her own narrative and risking everything to make her voice heard. Diana Unheard restores authorship of one of the most scrutinized lives in modern history to the woman at its center.”
