The strange and unsettling clown craze that captured headlines around the world in 2016 is being revisited in Clown Panic, a new documentary coming to Hulu as part of its Halloween programming.
The first trailer for the documentary takes audiences back to the bizarre reports of mysterious clowns appearing in communities, near wooded areas and around schools, beginning in South Carolina before the phenomenon rapidly spread across the United States and beyond.
Rather than simply looking at the sightings themselves, Clown Panic explores how rumours, social media and relentless news coverage helped transform a collection of unexplained reports into a widespread cultural phenomenon.
The trailer features interviews with people who experienced the events, law enforcement officials, professional clowns and cultural commentators, offering different perspectives on how the panic developed and why it became so difficult to contain.
Archival footage and online videos also feature prominently, recreating the atmosphere surrounding the 2016 scare and showing how quickly stories could travel in the social media era.
The phenomenon wasn’t limited to the United States, with similar clown sightings eventually being reported across multiple states and even in the United Kingdom.
One of the documentary’s more unexpected angles is the impact the controversy had on professional clowns. As the public association between clowns and frightening behaviour intensified, performers found themselves dealing with the fallout from a craze they had nothing to do with.
Clown Panic is directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Ed Perkins, whose previous documentary work includes Tell Me Who I Am and The Princess. The film is produced by Lightbox.
The documentary arrives as part of Hulu’s 2026 Huluween programming, giving audiences the opportunity to revisit one of the strangest real-world scares of the past decade just in time for Halloween.
Clown Panic premieres on Hulu on October 12, with the documentary also set to stream internationally on Disney+.
