Comedian and writer Mary Beth Barone is set to make her feature-film screenwriting and acting debut with Still We Met, an original romantic comedy she has written and will star in opposite Hamnet actor Joe Alwyn.
Loosely inspired by Barone’s own experiences, the film marks the narrative feature directorial debut of Zackary Drucker, the filmmaker behind the Emmy-nominated short-form docuseries This Is Me. The story follows a young woman at a crossroads who crosses paths with a charming British stranger. Over the course of one unforgettable night wandering through New York City, the pair reveal more about themselves than either initially intended.
Production is scheduled to begin this fall in New York.
Jack Heller and Caitlin de Lisser-Ellen will produce for Assemble Media, the company behind The Man I Love and Skeletons. Alex Bach and Daniel Powell of Irony Point, known for I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson, will also produce.
Lena Dunham and Michael Cohen are executive producing through their Good Thing Going banner, which most recently backed Dunham’s Netflix series Too Much. Madison Wolk will co-produce for Assemble Media, with Blake Mars serving as co-producer for Good Thing Going.
Still We Met represents a major new step for Barone, who has built a profile as a stand-up comedian, writer and actor. She currently stars opposite Benito Skinner in the Amazon/A24 comedy series Overcompensating, which has already wrapped production on its second season.
Barone also recently brought her comedy to Netflix with the hour-long special Galaxy Brain, which went on to appear in the streamer’s Top 10.
Meanwhile, Barone is expanding her television slate with Hard Feelings, an original romantic comedy series that she created and is set up at Hulu. The project was previously reported as being fast-tracked by the streamer after landing in a competitive situation.
With Still We Met, Barone is taking another step into feature filmmaking, joining forces with Alwyn and Drucker for a New York-set romantic comedy centered on an unexpected connection and a single transformative night.
