Diablo Cody Promises a More Emotional Side of Jennifer in ‘Jennifer’s Body 2’

Diablo Cody is preparing to bring Megan Fox’s iconic teen succubus back to the big screen in Jennifer’s Body 2, promising a deeper exploration of the character’s emotional struggles and tragic past.

During an appearance on the Petticoat Revolution podcast, the Oscar-winning screenwriter revealed that the upcoming sequel will delve further into what makes Jennifer both sympathetic and complex, examining the loneliness and insecurity beneath her terrifying transformation.

“Jennifer is a sympathetic character for me, before and after the transformation,” Cody explained. She noted that while audiences often remember Jennifer at her most powerful and confident, the character also experiences moments of profound vulnerability.

Cody praised Fox for capturing both sides of Jennifer, highlighting the actress’s ability to portray the character’s commanding presence alongside her more fragile moments.

The writer also hinted that the sequel is moving forward, describing it as imminent and suggesting that it will offer a fresh perspective on Jennifer’s experiences.

Although Cody remained tight-lipped about specific plot details, she emphasized that Jennifer’s loneliness and emotional depth will play an important role in the new film. Her comments suggest that the sequel will build on the original movie’s horror elements while giving audiences a closer look at the pain and isolation behind Jennifer’s monstrous persona.

Deadline previously reported that Cody is developing Jennifer’s Body 2 for 20th Century Studios. Original director Karyn Kusama has also expressed enthusiasm about the project, while Fox and Amanda Seyfried have both indicated interest in returning.

Speaking to Deadline last year, Kusama teased that she was familiar with some of the sequel’s early ideas but declined to reveal details. She described the potential follow-up as fun and outrageous, much like the original, and expressed confidence in Cody’s ability to deliver something exceptional.

Released in 2009, Jennifer’s Body follows Needy Lesnicki, played by Seyfried, and her friendship with Jennifer Check, portrayed by Fox. Jennifer’s life takes a horrifying turn after a satanic ritual performed by a devil-worshipping band goes wrong, leaving her possessed by a succubus with a deadly appetite for teenage boys. Adam Brody also stars as a member of the band responsible for the ritual.

Initially met with a mixed response, the horror comedy has since developed a devoted following, with Jennifer becoming a memorable figure in cult horror cinema. With Cody promising a more nuanced look at the character, the upcoming sequel could offer a deeper exploration of the vulnerability, isolation and darkness that have made Jennifer so compelling.
