Swedish pop powerhouse Tove Lo has officially entered her next musical chapter with the release of ESTRUS, her sixth studio album, a provocative and deeply personal collection that explores desire, identity, relationships and the complicated realities of growing older without losing yourself.

Released on September 18 through her independent label Pretty Swede Records, the 13-track album sees the singer return with the fearless attitude and infectious electronic production that have made her one of pop music’s most distinctive voices. However, beneath the club-ready beats and unapologetically candid lyrics lies a more introspective side of the artist, as she examines the tension between embracing adulthood and holding onto the unpredictable spirit that has defined her career.

For Tove Lo, honesty has always been at the heart of her music. Since breaking through internationally with “Habits (Stay High),” the singer has built a reputation for transforming personal experiences into pop anthems that are as emotionally revealing as they are irresistible. From heartbreak and intimacy to self-discovery and sexual freedom, her songwriting has consistently challenged the expectation that pop stars should present a polished, uncomplicated version of themselves.

With ESTRUS, she takes that philosophy further, embracing the contradictions that come with love, maturity and personal growth.

The album’s title draws from the biological term for a female mammal being in heat, reflecting the project’s primal energy while also suggesting something more vulnerable beneath its provocative exterior. Rather than simply celebrating desire, the record examines the emotional uncertainty that accompanies it, exploring what happens when instinct, independence and the expectations of adulthood collide.

That tension is particularly relevant to an artist whose work has long celebrated living outside conventional boundaries. As Tove Lo continues to navigate life and relationships, ESTRUS explores whether growing older necessarily means becoming more restrained — or whether it is possible to embrace stability without sacrificing spontaneity.

Musically, the album leans into pulsing electronic production, synth-driven melodies and dancefloor-ready rhythms, creating a soundscape that feels tailor-made for live performances. Yet the energy of the music is balanced by lyrics that reveal insecurity, emotional turmoil and the uncomfortable questions that can accompany even the most exciting moments in life.

The album opens with “a lot of feelings, no solutions,” a title that immediately establishes its central conflict. From there, tracks including “I’m your girl right?,” “DNH,” “I’m the cake” and “are we on a break” explore different dimensions of desire, self-worth and the uncertainty that can exist within relationships.

Among the album’s highlights is “des fleurs x stromae,” a collaboration with Belgian artist Stromae that brings another creative voice into Tove Lo’s world. The track adds an international dimension to the record, highlighting her willingness to explore new musical partnerships while maintaining her distinctive artistic identity.

Meanwhile, “if I could I would” brings a more vulnerable perspective to the album’s exploration of identity and self-acceptance. Elsewhere, “die for my art with a lonely heart” captures the relationship between creative ambition and emotional sacrifice, while “roomie” and closing track “source of life” contribute to the record’s more reflective side.

The result is a project that balances the provocative spirit fans have come to expect from Tove Lo with a greater willingness to sit with uncertainty. Rather than offering straightforward answers, the songs acknowledge that personal growth rarely follows a neat or predictable path.

ESTRUS also arrives after a longer gap between solo albums than Tove Lo has previously experienced. Following 2022’s Dirt Femme and her 2024 collaborative project Heat with producer SG Lewis, the singer took time to rediscover her creative direction. Returning to Sweden and reconnecting with familiar surroundings helped her approach songwriting from a more personal place, with longtime collaborator Ludvig Söderberg among the creative forces involved in shaping the album.

That period of reflection appears to have informed the record’s central themes, allowing Tove Lo to explore the relationship between her public persona and the more complicated emotions that exist behind it.

Throughout her career, Tove Lo has demonstrated that dance music and emotional honesty do not need to exist separately. Her biggest songs often pair euphoric production with uncomfortable truths, inviting listeners to dance through feelings they might otherwise struggle to articulate. ESTRUS continues that tradition, bringing together physical energy and personal introspection in a collection that refuses to make vulnerability feel like a weakness.

Ultimately, ESTRUS is about embracing the messiness of being human. Its songs recognise that desire can coexist with insecurity, that love does not necessarily eliminate uncertainty, and that maturity does not require abandoning the parts of yourself that make life exciting.

With her sixth studio album, Tove Lo reaffirms her commitment to making pop music on her own terms. Unfiltered, emotionally complicated and driven by an instinctive love of experimentation, ESTRUS finds the singer continuing to challenge expectations while remaining true to the qualities that first made her stand out.

For an artist who has never been interested in playing it safe, this latest release is another reminder that some of pop’s most compelling moments happen when the music embraces the chaos rather than attempting to control it.
