Their capsule plunges into the ocean, trapping them underwater as their oxygen supply dwindles and the possibility of rescue becomes increasingly uncertain.
A Race Against Time in
Above the Below
The newly released trailer establishes an atmosphere of mounting panic as mission commander Jackson, played by Elba, attempts to keep his fellow astronauts focused amid the unfolding disaster. Pilot Brooks, portrayed by FitzGerald, struggles with the terrifying reality of their predicament, while Jackson tries to maintain control as their chances of survival diminish.
With the crew trapped beneath the surface and precious little oxygen remaining, the astronauts face an impossible situation. Their fight to reach safety becomes a desperate test of endurance, courage and trust, forcing them to confront the possibility that not everyone will make it out alive.
The film’s official synopsis teases a high-stakes struggle in which the survivors must make life-or-death decisions about who will risk everything to reach the surface and who might be left behind. Combining the claustrophobic tension of an underwater thriller with the dangers of space exploration, Above the Below looks set to deliver an intense cinematic experience.
Idris Elba Takes on Dual Roles
Alongside leading the cast as Jackson, Elba co-directs the film with Martin Owen. The project is based on an original story by Owen, with the screenplay written by Elizabeth Morris, Matt Mitchell and Vicki Sargent.
FitzGerald stars as Brooks, while Tiffin also joins the cast as Rhodes. Producers Gina Carter and Matt Williams are overseeing the project, with Pascal Degove serving as executive producer.
With its confined setting, rapidly diminishing oxygen supply and the threat of irreversible decisions, Above the Below places its characters in a situation where every second counts. The trailer promises a suspenseful story built around the extremes people will endure when survival becomes their only priority.
Above the Below is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on December 4, 2026.
