Netflix has released the first trailer for Allen, an Australian live-action feature film from Brisbane-based Ludo Studio, the acclaimed production company behind the hit animated series Bluey.
The trailer offers a glimpse into the film’s unusual blend of science fiction, comedy, and heartfelt storytelling. Drawing comparisons to Steven Spielberg’s 1982 classic E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Allen explores what happens when an alien returns years after forming a bond with a human friend.
The story follows Petey, a man from Queensland whose life has been shaped by an extraordinary encounter with an alien named Allen during his childhood. According to the film’s official logline, “20 years after his encounter with an alien, Petey never moved on. Now his old friend has returned, and the reason why is complicated — and unexpected.”
As revealed in the trailer, Petey has struggled to move forward with his life, remaining fixated on the extraterrestrial experience that he considers the best thing that ever happened to him. Still hoping to reconnect with his long-lost friend, he regularly sends messages into space in the hope that Allen will hear him and return to Earth.
Eventually, Petey’s wish comes true when Allen makes an unexpected comeback. However, what initially appears to be a joyful reunion soon takes a complicated turn. Petey begins to suspect that the alien’s return may come with hidden motives. In one particularly revealing moment, Allen appears to acknowledge the damage he has caused, saying remorsefully, “Allen ruin Peedee’s life.”
The film was created by Daley Pearson, whose previous credits include The Strange Calls, The Strange Chores, and Bluey. Pearson co-directs the feature with Jeffrey Walker, known for his work on The Artful Dodger. The screenplay was written by Pearson and Sophie Miller, whose credits include Thou Shalt Not Steal.
Allen stars T.J. Power as Petey, alongside Charlotte Nicdao, Benedict Hardie, Kaipo Heke, Chaydon Jay, Josh Helman, Emily Barclay, and Danny Kim.
With its quirky premise and emotionally complicated reunion between a human and his extraterrestrial friend, Allen offers a fresh take on the classic alien-meets-human story.
Allen premieres globally on Netflix on November 12, 2026.
