WATCH HERE: Curry Barker’s New Horror Short Film ‘Mama Bear’ Debuts Exclusively on YouTube Ahead of Halloween

Horror filmmaker Curry Barker is back with a new project following the success of his breakout film Obsession. Titled Mama Bear, the short film has premiered exclusively on YouTube, arriving just in time to give horror fans a Halloween treat.

Announced only days before its release through a partnership with Windows, Mama Bear quickly caught viewers’ attention. Some fans speculated that the title could be a subtle reference to Obsession, particularly because one of the film’s central characters is named Bear, portrayed by Michael Johnston.

Barker’s Obsession has become one of the year’s biggest box-office successes, earning $519 million worldwide despite being made on a budget of less than $1 million. The film also received widespread critical praise and generated Oscar buzz for Inde Navarrette, who played Nikki, Bear’s love interest. In the story, Bear uses a mysterious toy known as the “One Wish Willow” to make Nikki fall in love with him, setting off a disturbing chain of events.

The success of Obsession has opened major doors for its cast and filmmaker. Navarrette has since been cast as Rogue in Marvel’s upcoming X-Men reboot, while Barker secured an eight-figure deal with Universal and Blumhouse. Before making his mark in feature filmmaking, Barker built his following through acting and directing horror content on YouTube.

Fans looking forward to a full-length project from the filmmaker also have something bigger on the horizon. Barker is set to direct Anything But Ghosts, an upcoming horror-comedy backed by Focus Features and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 7, 2027.

Barker co-wrote the screenplay with longtime collaborator and Obsession star Cooper Tomlinson. The two will also lead the cast, joined by Violet McGraw, Chris Reinacher, Bryce Dallas Howard and Aaron Paul.

According to the film’s official synopsis, Anything But Ghosts follows a group of fame-hungry aspiring ghost hunters whose search for attention takes a terrifying turn when they find themselves in a situation far beyond their control.

With Mama Bear now available online and Anything But Ghosts on the way, Barker continues to expand his presence in the horror genre while staying connected to the YouTube roots that first introduced him to audiences.
