Netflix has released the official trailer for Rob Lowe: The Outsider, a new documentary that takes an intimate look at the actor’s decades-long Hollywood career, personal struggles and remarkable ability to rebuild his life after public controversy.
Directed by Chris Smith, the filmmaker behind Tiger King, Fyre and Sr., the documentary promises to go beyond the familiar highlights of Lowe’s career, exploring the experiences that shaped him both on and off screen. Combining archival footage with new interviews featuring Lowe and people who have known him throughout his life, the film examines what it takes to survive the pressures of fame.
Lowe first rose to prominence as a young actor in the 1980s, becoming associated with Hollywood’s Brat Pack generation. His breakout performances in The Outsiders and St. Elmo’s Fire helped establish him as one of the era’s most recognisable young stars. He would go on to build an enduring career through projects including About Last Night, Wayne’s World, The West Wing and Parks and Recreation.
The newly released trailer traces that journey, opening with footage from Lowe’s younger years before revisiting the roles and experiences that defined different chapters of his life. Reflecting on his career, the actor explains that he remembers his life through the movies he made rather than the years that passed.
However, The Outsider is not simply a celebration of his professional achievements. The documentary also revisits the personal challenges and controversies that threatened to overshadow his success, including the widely publicised 1988 sex-tape scandal. Lowe has previously maintained that he was unaware of one participant’s age, and he was never criminally charged over the incident.
The film also explores Lowe’s struggles with addiction and the difficult road towards sobriety, offering a more personal perspective on the pressures that accompanied his early fame.
Several familiar faces appear throughout the documentary, including Demi Moore, who reflects on Lowe’s happiness during the height of his early success, and Gwyneth Paltrow, who delivers a humorous observation about his reputation as a Hollywood ladies’ man. His wife, Sheryl Berkoff, also discusses the challenges of witnessing his personal struggles.
For Lowe, revisiting these moments meant confronting parts of his life that were not always easy to share. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor revealed that the documentary took two years to complete and admitted he initially felt both flattered and anxious when Netflix approached him about the project.
The experience ultimately gave him an opportunity to reflect on a journey marked by extraordinary highs, difficult setbacks and unexpected second acts.
Directed by Chris Smith and executive produced by Marc Gurvitz, Jon Liebman and Zoe Rogovin, Rob Lowe: The Outsider offers a candid portrait of an actor whose career has continued to evolve across multiple generations of Hollywood.
Rob Lowe: The Outsider premieres on Netflix on November 24, 2026.
