Netflix is taking the Stranger Things franchise in a new direction with an upcoming prequel spin-off that will introduce a fresh setting, new characters, and unexplored supernatural mysteries. While the series will move beyond the familiar stories of Hawkins, it aims to preserve the horror, suspense, and emotional depth that made the original show a worldwide phenomenon.
During its annual Stranger Things Day celebration, Netflix unveiled the first teaser trailer for the upcoming series, officially titled Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure. The teaser offers a brief glimpse into the new chapter without revealing much about its storyline. The streaming giant also confirmed that the series is expected to premiere in 2028.
Set in the 1950s, Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure takes place before the events of both the original series and the stage production Stranger Things: The First Shadow. The prequel will explore a different period in the franchise’s history, introducing an entirely new group of heroes and villains.
Although Netflix has yet to share an official synopsis, the series is expected to expand the franchise’s mythology through fresh mysteries and supernatural threats. It will also maintain the distinctive blend of horror, spectacle, and character-driven storytelling that audiences have come to associate with Stranger Things.
The project is being developed by Matt and Ross Duffer alongside Kate Trefry, who previously worked on Stranger Things: The First Shadow. Trefry will take on multiple roles as the series’ showrunner, writer, and executive producer, while the Duffer Brothers will also serve as executive producers.
Behind the camera, acclaimed filmmaker Joe Wright will direct the first three episodes. Wright is known for directing several notable films, including Pride & Prejudice, Atonement, and Darkest Hour.
The executive production team will also feature Shawn Levy, Paul Dichter, Shelley Meals, Andrea Sperling, and Pavlina Hatoupis. Production is scheduled to take place in New Mexico, although Netflix has not yet announced additional casting details or other members of the production team.
With a new decade, fresh characters, and an expanded supernatural mythology, Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure promises to explore an entirely different side of the franchise. More details about its plot, cast, and release date are expected to emerge as the 2028 premiere approaches.
