INsiders Guide: Wintersleep, Mel Senese, Arms Akimbo, *repeat repeat and Cody Lovaas

On Wintersleep’s seventh full-length record, “In The Land Of”, the geography is both real and imagined. It is understood that our surroundings are not, in fact, essential or concrete elements; they’re constructed in relation to us, the inhabitants. Our identities, too, are constructed in relation to the land. The land, both physical and figurative, changes, and so do we. Familiar land. Foreign land. Inhospitable land. Unceded land. Stolen land. Dead land. The album was recorded between Bath, Ontario’s Bathouse Recording Studio and Toronto’s Revolution Recording, with Scottish producer and longtime collaborator Tony Doogan (Belle + Sebastien, Mogwai) back at the helm. The record’s cover features an image captured by photographer Richard Carey. It’s an underwater shot of garbage and debris floating just below the surface, with errant strands of lime-green seaweed stretching into the frame. Yet another fragment of ‘land:’ “It’s still a product of land- dwellers,” says drummer Loel Campbell of the image. “It’s a reference to our current failures as a planet, as a society.”

Forest Fire” is the first song off the album to capture the attention of listeners. Check it out below.

Born and raised in Chicago, Mel Senese offers a fresh take on soulful rock, infusing her own personal flair with flashes of pop and alternative sound. Producing and writing songs since the age of 17, her passion for music has only grown throughout the years. An artist of the Windy City, Mel has had the honor of not just performing throughout the midwest (including Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin) through more than 100 shows, but competing around the city as well, earning her the title of “Big Break Rosemont Champion” in 2017. Over the last five years, she has fronted for bands, as well as put on solo performances and has entertained crowds at venues including: Wrigley Field, House of Blues Chicago, Bub City, Old Crow Wrigleyville, Joe’s Live, The Forge Joliet, Tonic Room and more. Now focusing on her solo career, Mel has released her debut single “PREY”. Mel’s lyrical storytelling is both empowering and inspired, with her stage presence keeping you on the edge of your seat.

Arms Akimbo have released their brand new single “Paycheck”. The single acts as a thesis statement for 20-something’s going through life, pursuing an unconventional dream. Featuring melodic guitars, vibrant vocals and infectious lyrics, the single is an anthem for the youth of today.

The four-piece have found success touring with Walk The Moon, The Animals and Said The Whale. Arms Akimbo have received critical acclaim from such outlets as Billboard, Flaunt Magazine, Earmilk, Culture Collide and Live Nation’s One’s To Watch.

“Head On” is the brand new release from rock band *repeat repeat who will also drop their new album “Glazed” May 31st on Dangerbird Records. *repeat repeat deliver a batch of songs entirely true to the album’s title: sugary and sticky and impossibly shiny, all glistening harmonies and candy-coated hooks. But beneath the gloss lies something more jarring and jagged, a raw vitality generated by the Nashville band’s buzzy rhythms and blistering guitar work. Fortified by the distinct creative alliance of husband-and-wife duo Jared and Kristyn Corder, the result is an album that finds an unlikely power in irrepressible sweetness.
