INsiders Guide: Jane Ellen Bryant, Dia, Lucy & La Mer, Stephen Martines

Dia: Dia collaborated with Rock & Roll photographer Koury Angelo (Rolling Stone, Billboard, People) and Jamie Foxx’s daughter Corinne Foxx to create a video for her cover of the Turtle’s song “Happy Together”. Corinne Foxx is spokesperson for National Alliance on Mental Illness and wanted to explore the internal struggle with anxiety and depression. The video is quite powerful for this song and depicts one woman’s ever shifting relationship to her mental health. With songs like this it’s easy to see why Dia is quickly becoming one of the biggest break out acts this year, and “Happy Together” is easily going to cement her on the map to stardom.

Jane Ellen Bryant: Austin based, singer-songwriter Jane Ellen Bryant has a new EP coming out on the 22nd of September but til then you can be captivated by her music through her new single “Attention”. Bryant spoke of the single in which she said “While creating ‘Attention’ and the video concept in my head, I asked myself, “What would you do if you had no fear at all about what other people thought?” That was something I had never fully challenged myself to before. Almost a year later, here we are. My team and I took this crazy idea and chased it fully. I got lost in the transformation of these alter ego characters. I wanted to find a way to save myself within the story. Originally we all imagined that “Dom Jane” would be the most fearsome persona. Once I was in full costume of “House Wife Jane,” we realized that she was the true, frightening nut-case behind it all. It was a blast and a total release to become someone else for a few hours. The girl power dancing in the video came to life because dance was one of my very first art forms. It has always been a dream of mine to create a song that inspired people to choreograph movement together. As a kid, that was the way I first expressed my infatuation with a song. It had been ten years since I performed as a dancer, but I decided to awaken my passion for it with this project. Watching
people choreograph and learn a dance to my track was one of the most rewarding experiences of all time.”

Lucy & La Mer:  This LA-based indie project of singer/songwriter Lucy LaForge is known for her bright melodies and disarming lyrics, and now has a brand new single “Got That Thing” which examines the perils of online dating. Lucy spoke of the video saying “I wanted to make a video that was fun and add a little humor to the idea of online dating, too. It takes a lot of courage and self-confidence to put yourself out there. Sometimes you make a new friend, sometimes it’s love, sometimes it’s just an insanely awkward moment in time and you never see them again. In the end, it’s all about getting to know yourself better because you learn what you like and don’t like”.

The single gained traction playing on a national Dove Commercial, and has led to the band now embarking on their first European and UK tour. Lucy has shared the stage with some famous artists including electronic artist Moby, folk sirens Joseph, to emo rockers Bayside. She also stays close to her fans by by live-streaming every weekend on the band’s facebook page. “Got That Thing” is such a great representation of just how amazing this band is. Stephen Martines: “Sounds Like Whiskey” is the new track from Martines who taps into the vulnerability and mistakes that heartbreak often comes with. The singer channels his frustration and pain through his smooth vocals, as the song embodies a mix a pop, country and soul. “Sounds Like Whiskey” definitely contains every element country music listeners love, which is sure to make traction on the country charts. With such an explosive chorus it’ll have it’s country fans, singing along with the infectious melody over and over again.

After losing his father in 1994, Martines joined the Air Force to move his life in a more positive direction, only to find that this didn’t ease the pain of loss the way he was hoping it would. It became clear, after an injury ended his soccer career, that it was the creative arts that helped him work through many of his emotional battles. He made the move to LA, which opened the doors for a modelling and acting career and he embarked in roles on popular shows including Burn Notice, The Vampire Diaries and General Hospital, and working with musicians like Mark Shulman (drummer for Pink) to try to find a sound that fit him. It eventually led his down an elusive music path, that now has brought him to the release of the incredible single “Sounds Like Whiskey”. Be sure to check out the track below.
