the acclaimed German nu-disco producer Satin Jackets has released “First Thing” featuring the vocals of the UK singer Tailor. This new track, the third and final pre-release single from the forthcoming Satin Jackets double LP Reunion, fuses the signature Satin Jackets Ibiza ready balearic nu-disco sound with tasteful modern synth pop, a great example of what makes this forthcoming album a level up from the producer’s already successful first two records. You can listen to “First Thing” below:

There’s a wise and eloquent spirit bouncing between moments of soulful expression, R&B energy, pop bliss, and alternative boundary-breaking, at the heart of HUNTER’s music. A storyteller packed with soul whose honesty rings out just as powerfully as her vocals do. After generating millions of views with showstopping turns on YouTube live performance series, Scary Pockets, and attracting a growing audience, she properly introduces herself on her 2022 independent debut EP, Hello: My Name is HUNTER

“When I write, I think of how my lyrics could apply to my listeners,” Hunter says. “I know I was given a voice to sing. I feel like I need to share it. When you play my music, I want you to feel a connection. I want these songs to play into your life, help you escape, or celebrate a memory.”

Born in 1992, singing came early to Hunter, beginning with performances on the baby monitor. By the age of ten, she was performing every chance she got in her small hometown of Montana. Soon after, she was attending college intensives and summer schools across the country for vocal training and starring in high school and community theatre musicals, singing in several choirs and fronting her own band. She left Montana at the age of 18 to pursue a college education in Los Angeles at Musician’s Institute and graduated with a double major in Vocal Performance and Music Production. By 2016, she was paying the bills modeling and acting on television, and held down a year-long residency as house artist at the popular Los Angeles club and celeb hotspot, The Nice Guy.

On one particular modeling trip, Hunter met none other than GRAMMY® Award-winning recording artist, producer, and songwriter Lukas Nelson at the gate in the Austin, TX airport. Striking up an instant friendship, Lukas would enlist her to accompany him during various high-profile gigs such as sold out shows at The Troubadour and The Fonda, and an appearance on CONAN. His father Willie even recruited her to join him during his performances at the Hollywood Bowl and Austin City Limits.

“It was incredible to hear her music for the first time,” says Lukas. “I was struck by her soul…she’s just got so much soul.”

“I owe my ability to perform on the fly to the Nelsons,” Hunter adds. “Lukas taught me I needed just to get out and say, ‘Yes’.”

Genre-hip-hop/indie/Pop/alternative artist, Marcaux is thrilled to release his new single “Icing” that is out now along with the music video that can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqIyT_iFa-0.

“Icing” is off Marcaux’s new EP  titled Mom, Pick Me Up. I’m Scared set to come on in the new year. The video was directed/produced by Hunt For Gold Brooklyn and the song and EP was co-produced by Marcaux and Aire Atlantica.

Marcaux teamed up and signed with Repost/Soundcloud for this release as well.

Marcaux says “I was told in this industry that when something works, do it a dozen times. So here’s 2/12. I figured the first single should be a banger. So bang it. Half of the EP that “Icing” is on is sad singer songwriter songs. So I want you to start off on a fun note . Fun fact, the line in the song  “A dope producer stole my beat to make a bogus hit” is true. A HUGE producer (who will not be named) took one of my beats and it became a (somewhat) hit. the “I said eye for an eye and I stole his bitch” however, is not true. I wish haha”

Country singer, Trey Lewis’ new single “How About We Don’t” is out now. The song follows the success of five different single releases this year alone, including “My Ex Came Over” and “Single Again”, and is currently finishing up a multi-weekend run of shows with Kid Rock.

You can listen to the song HERE.

Trey says, “Breakups and makeups don’t always have to be messy. Sometimes it’s easy to forget why it ended. If you have found yourself in the heat of the moment connecting with someone you know you shouldn’t be then this song is for you. After a breakup its normal to question if you made the right decision so I know everyone can relate.”

Scottish songwriter and musician – DAVEY HORNE – has unveiled the official video for his new track “Welcome to the Future”.

WATCH THE OFFICIAL VIDEO HERE

Showcasing the full spectrum of his enviable abilities and marking a welcome return for the artist, he has now released a stunning video for the single. Filmed by Beezom Productions, the video sees aerial footage of the spectacular Scottish scenery fading into atmospheric live shots of Davey and his band at Tpot Studio in Perthshire

Davey explains:

“The video is all footage of us in the studio. The location and vibes at Tpot are absolutely incredible. The studio is an old schoolhouse situated up in the Hills in Perthshire, Scotland. We tracked the core of the track live with quite a few overdubs, so I wanted to try and capture all of this along with the energy on the day. It’s quite a special place.”

Beloved American Rock band The Early November recently announced their album “Twenty” set for release on 14th October on Pure Noise Records. Today, we are treated to another new single ‘Denent’.

Speaking about the new single Ace Enders said ‘Originally meant for ‘the rooms too cold’ this is a song about holding on to the innocent things that existed in life when you started your journey. Set over the jagged musical landscape that’s meant to feel like a rocky pass.’

Album ‘Twenty’ effortlessly straddles the divide between then and now, its 10 songs casting a backwards glance at the days and years gone by, while also looking forward to the future. A collection of both brand new tracks and older ones written during the course of the band’s life to date, the result is something of a paradox: this both is and isn’t a new Early November record.

“Twenty is an album we are extremely proud of.” says Ace Enders.  “It captures the moments of our 20 year career perfectly. Alot of these songs were originally b-sides from over the years, some of which are the strongest songs we’ve written together, but simply just didn’t fit on an album. It feels almost like fate that they were saved until now for this release.”

Lively alt/indie-pop trio The Happy Fits have arrived today with their highly anticipated third studio album, Under the Shade of Green, out everywhere now. In support of the new album, the band will hit the road this fall and winter across the EU and UK, with U.S. dates soon after with support from Daisy The Great and Phoneboy. Get tickets before they’re gone here.

The long-awaited third studio album, Under the Shade of Green, is a moment of processing the last two years for each of the three band members, and invites listeners to join them. In typical Happy Fits fashion, however, the band blends serious subject matter with inescapable hooks and melodies, beaming instrumentation and unparalleled charm.

More than ever, the last two years have exposed colossal systemic failures throughout the world and \ Langman (lead vocals/electric cellist) says the album created space to better understand his role within it. “This album is how I’ve been processing the trauma of the past two years, from the pandemic, to climate change, to the rise of fascism, to BLM, to finding my place in this broken world. As there aren’t many who are left unshaken, I hope everyone can find something dark in here to relate to.”

In little over a year, London based vocalist and visual artist Willow Kayne has enjoyed a prodigious ascent to the pinnacle of pop music’s more daring corners. Her postmodern approach to songwriting was rewarded in 2021 with Willow receiving the Ivor Novello Rising Star award, setting her on a path to achieve greatness early in her career. Her riotously received debut EP Playground Antics was the catalyst for an explosion of rave reviews, while with live shows and online previews, she has shared a glimpse of the soundtrack to her ever-expanding sonic world. With recent singles “Final Notice” and “White City,” Willow shared more propulsive and surreal facets of her arsenal, while with the release of new track “Rat Race” today, Willow delves deep into introspection in her own unique way.

Opening to jagged yet muted guitar tones, Willow questions her own path towards her goals – using a slack yet melodic flow to express her distaste with how uncertain her path is. Her lyricism is refreshingly appropriate for today’s current landscape, with lyrics such as “I’m only seeing successes, the others don’t reach For You page’, referencing the industry’s obsession with social media as a means of staying  relevant. “Rat Race’s” chorus acts as a sonic unburdening of the mental constraints that are binding Willow, with a balmy, uplifting instrumental line that soothes the bite of the track’s previous spiked-edged momentum. Willow’s vocal elevates; fully opening up and surrendering to the ridiculousness of the industry she finds herself in and contemporary adult life.

On the track, Willow says: “I wrote ‘Rat Race’ when I was going through a little crisis; the music business sometimes makes me feel like I am a lottery ticket among millions of others. To sum it up briefly, it’s about the moment when you ask yourself “Am I doing this right? Or better yet, what AM I doing?”

Nice little existential crisis this one.”

How do you follow-up a career high point? If you’re Julian Taylor — the Toronto-based singer/songwriter who garnered widespread acclaim for his intimate June 2020 solo album, The Ridge, you double down on upping your game by striving to exceed the creative fruits that have already blossomed from the artistic spark that got you there in the first place.

No pressure, right?

“No pressure at all!” Taylor agrees with a laugh. “Actually, I didn’t put pressure on myself when I was writing this new album. I knew the pressure was there — it’s sort of invisible, in a way — but I didn’t go into the process thinking about the pressure of writing great songs. I was doing the best I possibly could, and I just tried to do it better than I did the last time.”

Hanne Mjøen is not your average pop queen. The Norwegian alt/pop artist creates music that makes you want to dance, with lyrics that make you want to cry. Her intoxicating sound is coated in a dark, raw edge, providing a comforting reminder that it’s ok to be flawed, while her lyrics pull the trigger for an outlet of pent-up emotions.

Mjøen is just a small-town girl, living in a lonely world. The child of a hairdresser and a salesman, she came of age in Oppdal, a small mountain village. She had never dreamt of becoming a pop star. All she wanted to do was to sing and write songs, and hopefully have them make an emotional connection with someone out there. Pop music as a genre – with its booming choruses, spine-tingling chord progressions and lyrics about love, longing and betrayal – not its popularity, was what had appealed to her.

This is her journey to find the strength to say it as it is. And she is taking you with her on this journey. Her next single “I Never Told You” continues to take us on an exploration of emotional tribulations. Showing strength in concealment, Mjøen explains, ”There’s so many things you never tell and keep inside, hiding hard feelings to seem stronger than you are. This song is about not wanting people to see you in your weak and darker moments, but also acknowledging them. I don’t want to burden you with my shade, and I won’t let you carry me, cause what if you can’t take it? What if this destroys your image of me, and you start to pity me? I don’t want that. I wrote this song thinking of my mom and all the things I never tell her, cause I want to be the strong and independent person she sees me as.” Shaded with ascending synthesisers, euphoric vocal energy and rhythmic bliss, her latest single opens gracefully into Mjøen’s contagious musicality. To date, her music has garnered over 23 million streams, receiving airplay in over 25 countries worldwide, including Annie Mac and BBC Radio 1. In 2021 she was the 7th most played artist on Norwegian radio and has been praised by the likes of The Fader, The Line Of Best Fit, Paper Mag, Wonderland Mag, 1883 Mag and many more. 2022 is set to be an explosive year for Hanne Mjøen.

Larkin Poe – the GRAMMY® Award-nominated duo of Georgia-bred, Nashville-based multi-instrumentalist sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell – have shared “Georgia Off My Mind,” available now at all DSPs and streaming services. A heavy-hearted yet swinging lament for what we leave behind in chasing our dreams, the track is joined by an official music video/visualizer streaming now at YouTube. “Georgia Off My Mind” marks the latest single from Larkin Poe’s upcoming sixth studio album, Blood Harmony, arriving via their own Tricki-Woo Records on Friday, November 11. Pre-orders are available now, including limited edition magenta colored vinyl, CD, cassette, and more.

Like 99 percent of my songs, that song came into being at my kitchen table late in the evening,” says Rebecca. “My husband and I stumbled into that line at the chorus – ‘Tennessee keep Georgia off my mind’ – and it turned into a love song for the stretch of I-24 that connects Atlanta and Nashville, which is a drive we’ve made thousands of times now.

American Dreams Records today announced Marvin Tate’s D-Settlement, a deluxe 4xLP/3xCD box set reissue of the legendary Chicago band’s first three albums. Partly Cloudy, The Minstrel Show, American Icons will see their first ever worldwide digital/physical release on November 4th, 2022 with remastered audio by Mikey Young (Ty Segall, Parquet Courts), design by Field of Grass (Numero Group, Paradise of Bachelors), and an oral history book featuring words by Angel Bat Dawid, Jaimie Branch, Ben LaMar Gay, among many others.

Alongside the announcement, D-Settlement released “Turn Da Fuckin’ Lights Back On”. A crowd favorite from their 1997 debut Partly Cloudy, the track is available today on DSPs for the first time ever. On the song, Tate expands: “This is my version of ‘The Revolution Will Not Be Televised’ by Gil Scot Heron. It was written after an electric power shortage in my all black neighborhood on the city’s west side that went on for close to a week.”

Continuing to carve her own way to the top, rising R&B/Pop singer songwriter Nat Slater is back with nostalgic summer jam “Ride The Wave” featuring LA based artist and producer Finn Matthews.

Dreamy synths and slick R&B drum loops lay the perfect foundation for Nat’s signature honeyed vocals as she tells the story of laid-back young love. In the VHS style video we see Nat between LA and London, oozing personality Nat performs effortlessly to camera. A uniquely talented musician and songwriter Nat is steadily building a name for herself with her ability to combine hazy R&B in pop-edged soundscapes. Jumping on the track with his bouncy flow and rich vocals, rising artist Finn Matthews compliments Nat perfectly in a duet bound to set them apart from their contemporaries.

Speaking on the track Nat tells us: “Ride the wave is about being in the moment with someone and not caring what happens next. I wrote it while I was in LA making music, the sun was shining everything felt very blissful, I just wanted to capture that feeling.”

LA indie-pop quartet Atta Boy share nostalgia-tinged single “Spring Seventeen,” out everywhere now, alongside a dreamy music video. Another peek into what’s to come from the band, the gentle track feels like getting lost in a daydream as memories begin to fade into the wind of a new day.

“Spring Seventeen” is a smooth, slow tune that captures the parts of nostalgia that are undesired as certain memories begin to fade and change with time. Lead vocalist Eden Brolin softly sings, “Caught in a brief memory / Like a song you get used to / Loosen the grip of reverie / From distractions I’ve been to / I don’t know you like I used to / Already forgetting you”  The track explores the idea that memories begin to take on new shapes and spaces in one’s mind when time creates distance from them.

The idea for “Spring Seventeen” began musically a few years ago by guitarist Freddy Reish and after taking a quick liking to it, Brolin added lyrics during a visit to the laundromat. “There’s a really specific memory from high school that just worms its way into my head every once in a while, and I guess started to think about how those images and understanding of events start to shift,” says Brolin. “It doesn’t feel so long ago but the substance of the memory has been sifted like 800 times, so it inevitably feels like a game of telephone that just keeps coming back around to you.”

Los Angeles indie-pop vocalist KiKi Holli creates stunning and soulful music woven with intricate emotive storytelling for a truly captivating and cathartic listening experience with an eclectic musical aesthetic. Holli draws on inspiration from her rich theatrical background, as well as from iconic artists such as PRINCE, Dusty Springfield, The Cure, Stevie Nicks and Siouxsie and the Banshees.

Crafting a unique sound, KiKi Holli’s music is beautifully vulnerable and nurturing, with themes of connection, healing, personal growth, and living in the moment. If her delivery seems genuine—empathetic even—that’s because it is. She’s been there.

“You know, Amor fati — love your fate, love whatever is in front of you and embrace the moment,” she says.

Holli’s debut single was a breathtaking cover of Roxy Music’s “More Than This”, a raw and intimate version of the celebrated 80’s hit. Collaborating with acclaimed producer Ethan Allen (Throwing Muses, Tricky, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club), she was inspired to release her own version of the song in the midst of dealing with intense grief and loss.

Her first original song, “NEW HIGH” is a celebration of simple pleasures, finding solace in your happy place and a returning to love after a time of hardship. With soaring vocals singing sunshine-dipped melodies over lush and blissful pop rock soundscapes, “NEW HIGH” is a welcome sonic escape, collaborating again with Allen to create a landscape of music that pulls the listener into the neon glow of a surreal joy ride down the coast of Malibu.  The track received praise from the likes of Earmilk, Atwood Magazine and Buzzbands who proclaimed it “a day-brightener in which her crystalline vocals ooze optimism with every note”.

In her new single “Play To Lose”, KiKi examines leaving a toxic relationship and finding your voice and confidence in the end. With layered vocals full of confidence and depth, and acoustic guitars dripping with nostalgia, “Play To Lose” is a radiating groove-infused roots pop single. “Play To Lose” reminds the listener to know your own worth and find your power even in the most hopeless of situations.

With a new album in the works, KiKi Holli creates relatable music that culminates into a diary of hope for listeners across the globe.

As PLASMAS confirm the release of their debut EP this October, today the Dundee quintet are pleased to present one of its dreamiest moments: “Notice”.

Recalling the reverb-dappled melodies of Wild Nothing or the tranquil psych-pop of Tame Impala at their most sedate, “Notice” drifts in-and-out like a welcome breeze on a sunny afternoon.

Switching things up since their last single (“See It Through”), the track sees bassist James Swan taking the lead on vocal and writing duties for the first time. “Notice” was written in the haze of one of those languorous hot days, where there’s little on the agenda and all the promise of a long summer ahead. Feeling the blissful sensation of nothingness and everything all at once, James felt the song’s words and melodies fall naturally into place. Speaking about the experience that formed the track he says:

“I remember sitting down on my living room floor with my acoustic guitar, lounging in a sunbeam shining through the window, and being overcome with a feeling of complete bliss. It’s a bit of a cliché but everything just came so naturally and I didn’t purposefully set out to write anything of substance at that moment. Before I knew it I had written the whole song and was demoing it to bring to the rest of the band. It’s the first song we’ve done where Ross isn’t the lead vocalist so I think it’s allowed us to flaunt our versatility somewhat.”

iconic underground producer/DJ, artist Justin Robertson and his Deadstock 33s alias joins forces with legendary former Fall guitarist Brix Smith for psychedelic surf disco cut ‘Brix Goes Tubular’. The single released alongside its extended version anticipates the upcoming ‘Brix Goes Tubular’ EP due on September 23rd, with a dub version dropping on September 2nd – via EMK – the electronic music platform launched by Kartel Music GroupStream ‘Brix Goes Tubular’ Here

Riding the infinite wave of an endless summer’s day, they pair created a smooth slice of psychedelic dance – a record for the beach and basement alike – swathed in colours of dub, and invoking the spirit of Compass Point Studios via the acid disco.
“We wanted to capture the spaciousness of a distant beach as the surf rolled in and the sound of a rider in the tube of the wave,” explains Justin Robertson . “The wide open palette of dub and particularly the vibe of Compass Point was very much our touchstone. There are hints of the Tom Tom Club in  there too, for good measure”.

I’m writing to share my new single entitled “New Romantics” with you today! A cynical song about naive lust mistaken for love, you can listen to it now on: SoundCloud 🎈Spotify 🎈Apple Music.

At a young age any type of connection can feel like true and utter love. Although it can be toxic and sex fuelled, the slight hope of this type of relationship turning into something more masks the obvious imperfections. Cynically labeling any relationship as New Romantics” because no one else has, understands, or supports your ‘love’ pulls your mind deeper into this rabbit hole.

For this track, I really wanted a more organic sound but still wanted to keep a modern feel. Without hesitation, Brandon Unis and Brad Simons went all out with live guitar, drums, piano and vocals to create my favourite part in the song – a Beatles-esque vocal harmony step up into a James Brown inspired guitar solo breakdown.

I do use my own experiences and life as inspiration for songs, but I am not really looking at the songwriting process as a cathartic experience. I love to write. I love to be inspired by lots of things and I feel that I can write about almost anything. The goal is still to move people, and it doesn’t matter to me if it’s making someone happy or sad from my own life experiences or by telling someone else’s story.

Thanks for taking the time to listen!

Elizabeth M Drummond returns with her cathartic, new single was penned and produced in  just 24 hrs titled  “I Tried.” There is a clue in the title for what this song is about, and anybody who has ever cared enough to try to make a relationship work in the hardest circumstances will relate, and will know how much sadder it is when it ends.  This song is out immediately via Young Poet.  Elizabeth has also announced her debut EP “Congratulations” will be released November 18th.

Explaining how the song came to be, Elizabeth explained “This song started with a lo-fi hip hop loop which I played guitar over. I think I wrote and produced this song in its entirety in one day, which is rare, but also necessary for me in recent years. I will often abandon something if I don’t finish it very soon after starting. Again, this song is just a reflection of how I was feeling after coming out of a relationship that had run its course. I have to thank my dear friend Guy Tarento (Angus1) for pushing me to finish the song &; the production on my own. I would never have released it without his insistence.

Fast ascending alt/pop artist – LE JUNK – is back with his first new music of 2022: ‘Midnight Lover’ (out 12th August, via Naked Superstar Recordings).

LISTEN HERE

A syrupy melange of wiry guitar licks and elasticated basslines, shot-through with a pneumatic electroclash crunch, “Midnight Lover” is as hot and heady as the heatwaves of ‘22.

With lyrics as sticky and seductive as leather-on-skin at the height of summer, it finds Le Junk toying with society’s unspoken taboos and flirting with those dark, hedonistic impulses that lurk deep beneath the surface.

As Le Junk explains of the track:

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

“Set within one’s guilty conscience, “Midnight Lover” is a tragic self-conflict tale of lust vs love, as wrong-doings form a moral battle of selfishness and delusion.”

Riding on a bed of fuzzy grooves and frenzied synths lines that refuse to relent, Le Junk commands from the front with a march of rhythmic spoken-word slogans, as salacious as they are sarcastic.

“A perfectionist, who would have guessed? What if I said I’m addicted to the rest?” he quips, tongue just-about in-cheek as he taps into the conflicted thoughts of an inner-psyche embroiled in a sordid war with itself.

Taking cues from the heavy bass and beat driven styles of artists like Peaches, LCD Soundsystem, and Death From Above 1979, the Le Junk sound is a taut blend of sharp alternative-pop and slick electroclash, strewn with stories of sleazy misdemeanours and darkly sardonic humour.

Having previously fronted acts Eighteen Nightmares at the Lux and Big & The Fat, he parted ways with those projects with ideas of creating new material under a solo moniker. Initially writing demos on a bass and drum machine, he soon began shaping and styling a canon of material of his own identity from the comfort of his bedroom studio. Choosing to surface amidst the mayhem of 2020 as Le Junk, his debut solo single “Rich Romance” pointed to a refreshing new artist that spelled-out that there’s always space to have some fun.

Releasing a succession of highly addictive, genre-bending singles ever since, “Midnight Lover” is just the latest in a fine lineage that also includes “America” and “Sticky Side” that have seen him earn praise from key tastemakers including The Line of Best Fit, Wonderland, Earmilk and Clash.

An active member of London bands Human Music, White Devil Disco, and Frances Lion; Le Junk has also recently begun to take his own project to the live stage for the first time.

Performing as a 5-piece band, the shows have seen Le Junk quickly making waves across London, with the band supporting the likes of Deadletter, Meatraffle, and Alien Tango. With further support slots confirmed throughout the coming months, Le Junk are also due to play their first London headline show in early 2023.

The Dears have announced Return To Lovers Rock, an expanded digital edition of their most recent album, Lovers Rock, set for release on 9 September.

The new collection adds five acoustic recordings, including the single “I Know What You’re Thinking And It’s Awful (Acoustic)” which is available today for streaming on all digital platforms.

The Dears’ Natalia Yanchak said: “We originally released Lovers Rock in 2020. It was an album we were, and are still, very proud of.  Murray and I recorded an acoustic session just before we released the album. Again, back in 2020 we spent the day at Hotel2Tango studio in Montreal — we put out the videos of some of these sessions, but now can finally share the audio on this deluxe upgraded version of the album, Return to Lovers Rock. It’s kind of like Return to the Planet of the Apes: we can’t not go back there. There’s unfinished business down on Lovers Rock, so it’s time for a spin off!”

Brooklyn, NY-based indie pop band Daisy the Great have shared their hypnotic new single, “Aluminum,” available via S-Curve/Hollywood Records at all DSPs and streaming services HERE. An official music video – directed by Zach Tavel (Band of Horses) – is streaming now via YouTube HERE. “Aluminum” heralds the arrival of Daisy the Great’s eagerly awaited new album, ALL YOU NEED IS TIME, available everywhere on Friday, October 28. Pre-orders are available now HERE.

“‘Aluminum’ was actually the last song we wrote for the album,” say Daisy the Great’s Kelley Nicole Dugan and Mina Walker. “We wrote it with our pal Gabe Goodman, and it is about self-perception. It’s the feeling of time moving forward and taking a version of you with it that you don’t feel connected to – as if your social persona or personality, some shinier version of you, has taken over, and you don’t know how to be your real self anymore.

The music video for ‘Aluminum,’ directed by Zach Tavel, is about an older set of twins coming to a breaking point in their relationship. We were talking with Zach about the meaning of the song – feeling stuck behind a version of yourself that doesn’t feel like you at your core – and we eventually landed on this idea of twins with a turbulent relationship. One twin seems to call the shots for both of them and the other’s resentment grows as she longs for independence and sense of self. And we are a mini band stuck in a jukebox at their house.

Just before the pandemic hit, my wife and I took a roadtrip through rural Australia, near her hometown. One particular leg of the trip stands vividly in my memory, bright and happy. But suddenly – days later – our marriage came to an end. In the time since, I’ve struggled to come to terms with our breakup.

I think about that bright day on the road and it seems impossible that, on the one hand, that time is over; on the other hand, that it ever existed. An existential mind fuck.

The best pop artists take the structural stuff of a song – words, melody and rhythm – and weave them into something incredible, full of feeling and meaning. That’s what I hope to do with my music.

The artwork that accompanies the song was made by the graphic designer Dakota Koop. I love this image. It shows an Australian magpie; they’re incredible, playful birds with strange, digital-sounding vocalizations. You can hear magpie calls worked into the song itself. They’re dear to my heart and remind me of cherished memories.Things disappear; important people, times, phases of life. There’s sadness and new things come and you keep going. Thanks for hearing me out, apollonio

I’ll be your cellar / If you’re looking for somewhere to run

It’s difficult seeing friends succumb to addiction. A double entendre, “Cellar” juxtaposes the perspective of the ‘cellar’ who provides refuge with the ‘seller,’ or enabler, who doesn’t have someone’s best interests at heart. The droning guitar in the last chorus is in homage to Placebo’s “Every You Every Me,” from their album Without You I’m Nothing, which addresses a similar theme.

I’ll be your seller / If you’re looking for somewhere to run

Like a long, dark piece of music, the pandemic started small, then got big, and loud, and painfully dissonant. Hot Buttered Rum did their best to cope with its indignities, as most did, and much of that coping was done through the business of making lots and lots of noise. The songs that emerged from all this noise-making are a little louder than any the band has released to date in what became the latest album, Shine All NightHot Buttered Rum hopes to help provide some cheer in the times ahead, whether those times are brighter, darker or, as so often, somewhere in between.
