INsiders Guide: Juliet Ivy, Dean Mitchell, SYLVETTE, Zach Day, Mae Krell, REFS, QUARRY, Atta Boy, Declan O’Donovan, Bri Oglu…

Over a bouncy house of 8-bit synths and piano stabs, the Gabby Start-produced track once again connects Ivy to the hyperpop scene she entered with “ZOOM”, her debut single which received over 840K streams independently. “MY LIL PONY” was added to Spotify’s editorial ‘hyperpop’ playlist, days within its release on August 25th. Featured alongside artists like Charlie XCXshygirl, and glaive, Juliet’s sexually charged yet liberating lyrics intertwined with her playful production firmly establish her place in the whimsical world of hyperpop.

Growing up as Columbian-Chinese American in New York City, 21-year-old Juliet Ivy has crafted her sound from a melting pot of cultural influences. She has a natural ability to put a GenZ twist on tradition like few in her lane. When asked about her music, Juliet says “I would describe my music as a modern wink at childhood. It’s an appreciation of and nod to our youth without being juvenile; it’s still mature”. Juliet is constantly inspired by the community she has started building since day one, having received heartfelt messages from her fans (even from all the way in the Philippines!) telling her how proud they are of her bringing more Asian representation to the global music scene. Aiming to join the likes of fellow NYU Tisch alumni Take a Daytrip, Fletcher, and underscores, Juliet is riding her lil pony on the way to pop stardom.

Following a successful debut, Mexican-American artist Dean Mitchell offers a raw and honest new single “Pieces. Produced by Lost Boy (GLADES, Garrett Nash, Lilyisthatyou), the moody grunge-pop record explores her 20-something experience facing self-sabotage, shallow friendships, “borderline-reckless” behavior, and an overall nihilistic outlook on life.

“When I wrote this I was trying to grow up and be the best, healthiest, most successful person I could be but the world just kept on getting worse and worse. I fell into such a dark place where I didn’t care about anything anymore and it also felt like no one even cared how down bad I was. I think it was an extreme period I needed to go through to find my balance in the real world.” – Dean Mitchell

Dean Mitchell is a queer Mexican-American singer and songwriter claiming a new space in the alternative pop realm. Dreamy and ambitious, Dean Mitchell’s forthcoming records wade through heavy emotions with a lighthearted resiliency typical of a Cancer. The enigmatic songstress feels at home in the genre-less landscape of today’s music and offers her unique talent for listeners who also feel like “chameleons” — always a little out of place and hard to pin down.

Growing up she found inspiration in a wide range of influences: funk and R&B of the 70s and 80s, 90s grunge, polished 2000s pop, and everything in between. With whimsical production by Lost Boy, her moody songs sparkle with radical honesty and highlight her bright and powerful vocals. Dean Mitchell sings about the messiness and turmoil of growing up, grieving, and trying to find your place in the world with bright eyes and an open heart.

“Obviously, the intrigue of Dean Mitchell’s debut single got to us immediately… It’s hard not to be caught eyes open and mouth agape upon bearing witness” Ones To Watch

A sprawling rendition that sees Sylvette pay homage to the Nine Inch Nails original just as easily as they do douse the track with their own allure, the band initially released an early version of “Right Where It Belongs” on YouTube back in 2020. Having amassed almost 20,000 views since, the cover gained traction with Nine Inch Nails fans who flooded the video’s comment section “proclaiming they connected to it just as much if not more than the original.”

Quietly contemplative cover that’s laced with a heart-rending sense of feeling, vocalist Charlie Sinclair explains how it finds its place on their upcoming album:

“”Right Where It Belongs” is the first cover we’ve ever played together that really felt like we made it our own. The song is about questioning your reality and how going through change and trauma can distort the way you perceive yourself. It really felt appropriate for the theme of our upcoming album ‘Single Thread’, so we made it the closing track on the record.”

This is Zach Day, folk pop singer/songwriter. Growing up in the backwoods of Kentucky, I would skip class and instead teach friends and family to sing in close knit three part harmony and play the guitar.

Together with Canadian radio top charting producer Alex ‘Pilzbury’ Vujic, we penned my first single “If It Kills Me,” which was mixed by JUNO Award-winning mixer Jason Dufour.

This song hits close to home as I struggle in relationships, often self reflecting on my own insecurities. “If It Kills Me” is written about that struggle to let go. The song boasts acoustic instruments, a 50’s vibe with an exhilarating vocal performance that will stand up against the very best.

New York-based singer and songwriter Mae Krell is back with her new single, “tooth fairy,” out on all streaming platforms today. “tooth fairy” is Mae’s first new single since the release of her acclaimed 4-track EP, ‘imposter syndrome,’ which was debuted earlier this year. The EP struck a chord with fans and tastemakers alike, with PRIDE aptly describing it as “an intimate and heart-wrenching dissection of the unavoidable self-doubt we all experience in our 20s.”

Her newest single, “tooth fairy,” is one of the previously unreleased tracks that came from the ‘imposter syndrome’ EP sessions. Beautiful, heart-wrenching and deeply introspective, “tooth fairy” is a song about coming to the realization that you may be better off without someone who you previously thought was indispensable. Mae elaborates: “I wrote it after I found out that someone who used to be my best friend moved to the city where I grew up. It felt like tearing open an old wound that I didn’t know I had, and also put me in a spot to question: if the chance were to arise, would I want to give them a second chance? That’s something I’m still trying to figure out.”

At just 23 years old, Mae exudes a musicality wise beyond her years. Influenced by revered singer-songwriters like Bob Dylan, Phoebe Bridgers and Gregory Alan Isakov, Mae writes intimate reflections that confront past trauma, self-love and personal truths. With a distinct folk-pop sound and undeniable lyrical prowess, she has earned millions of streams across her repertoire with multiple tracks breaking 500K.

Something cool on the way from REFS, who are set to return next week!

In April of 2020, separated by 3000 miles, vocalist Rich and producer Dessauer went into

self-isolation. Physically, of course — like the rest of us. But also musically.

Turning inwards, Rich scoured Dessauer’s instrumental vault for the most menacing, introverted

and Dessauer come together again as Refs, to offer their debut album “New Religion”.

Milan-based Singer-songwriter QUARRY has unveiled his new single “This Is The Story”, taken from forthcoming LP ‘Positioning The Sun’ (out 14 October, via Lowfieye Records).

With airy instrumentals, minimalist analog synths, steady acoustic guitars and gauzy vocals that descend into dramaturgic choruses, “This Is The Story” deftly balances the line between ethereal and enormous.

The first song written for the new LP, the song tells the tale of a video chat between two friends. “One is depressed and is slipping into the quicksand of malaise,” Quarry explains, “while the other tries to lead him away from darkness and the dangerous no-go zone.”

An emotive track that feels simultaneously overcast and edged with optimism, “This Is The Story” is an incandescent introduction to the album as a whole. Packed out with tracks that have an urgent tone and dark energy, for every downtrodden mood there’s a euphoric opposite: Quarry offers visions that embrace a multiplicity of meanings.

Chiming with the song’s themes of isolation and communication, the single arrives with a moving official video. Directed by Vincenzo Campisi, the black and white visuals capture Quarry performing alone, interspersed with flashes of some of the song’s most potent and personal messages.

LA indie-pop quartet Atta Boy announce their long-awaited third studio album Crab Park due out October 21 and available for pre-order now, along with contemplative single + video “Deep Sea Ladder,” where the band swims in the freedom of embracing their own insecurities.

Atta Boy’s third studio album Crab Park is a pacifying body of work that feels like a candle in a dark room–a quiet guiding light that evokes a particular sense of serenity. With album art designed by the band’s own Lewis Pullman (drums), the ten track body of work allows the band to thoughtfully reflect on the varied aspects of change–nostalgia, an ever-changing understanding of home, the value of meaningful friendship and the vulnerability that comes with embracing the full, broad spectrum of emotions throughout life’s highs and lows. With imaginative song structures and twirling melodies, Crab Park is a buoyant celebration of the natural cycle of living, dying, dissolving, and reforming, ultimately, perpetually in bloom.

On the latest track “Deep Sea Ladder,” Eden Brolin sings with unbounded honesty, “I know this house is sinking, every shingle out of line / I know this house is broken, you remind me all the time / But this house is mine.” It’s an intimate, pensive tune that sees the narrator take ownership of their flaws and insecurities where they find freedom in their own faults.

The process of writing “Deep Sea Ladder,” Brolin explains, “was written as an exercise In an effort to practice writing songs more quickly and with less judgment. The exercise involved going through literature and sort of randomly finding words and placing them together in different variations as a jumping off point.” Landing on the words “Deep Sea Ladder” Brolin continues, “stuck out as it made me think of something I was grappling with at the time and through that allowance of curiosity that image continued to be fleshed out. The band was vital in finding colors in the music and production that fill out the story more vibrantly.”

The musical vastness and ambivalence of Declan O’Donovan’s sound is reflected by the picturesque backdrop between his home of Whitehorse in Canada’s Yukon and the urban centres from Toronto to Montreal that he frequents. For over a decade, the Canadian has succeeded in creating stylistically unique fusions of the most diverse of song writing approaches. Nothing is too strange, too big or too far: alternative folk, psychedelic rock, classical piano, you name it.

Albums with an eccentric richness of ideas like his self-titled debut (2012) or the larger-than-life “Broken Sky” (2017) have made O’Donovan one of the most sought-after musicians in Canada. Comparisons range from Tom Waits to Randy Newman or Harry Nilsson, but of course don’t really do the creative maverick and his unmistakably rough timbre any justice. His new release “Get Thee Behind the Wheel” once again shows that he’s riding a wave of his own, subject to his own transformations.

Bri Oglu has released her latest single, “Enough.” This sultry-pop piece explores the open and honest experience of heartbreak, toxic relationships, and the conscious decision to leave. “Enough” is currently available on all digital platforms worldwide.

“Enough” is the second installment of Bri Oglu’s debut EP, Somewhere Else. Diving headfirst into the ugly truths of heartbreak, relationships, and a love story without a happy ending, Oglu is able to tell this sad tale not from a low place, but from a place of growth, love, and wishing someone well even after a negative experience. Her alluring voice and captivating lyrics tell the story of a close friend of Oglu. “I wrote this song through both my eyes and the eyes of my closest friend who had been in a relationship with an addict,” says Oglu. “Initially, the chorus was about seeking clarity, but when I began collaborating with the producer, we ended up rewriting it to be about moving on and growth. The change felt right and like growth in and of itself.” Her lyrics, co-written by producer Will Snyder, speak from the heart as she says, “hope you find some peace, hope you fall in love,” and “hope you remember me and know you’re enough.” She forgivingly addresses the past partner by wishing them well and reminding them that there still is a chance at love even if it isn’t with her. With production by Snyder, mixing by Tim Latham, and mastering by Sterling Sound’s Idania Valencia, “Enough” is a blend of heartache and genuine well wishes tied together by Oglu’s unique alt-pop sound.

One of the most promising independent artists of the new generation is 22-year-old Aaryan Shah. Born and raised in Los Angeles, he has steadily ascended since he first dropped out of school to pursue music at age 15. He now readies for his fourth full-length project.

As a teenager, Aaryan built an identity by removing his identity, erasing his presence from the internet and wearing a mask — allowing his fans to focus on the emotions rooted in his art. After his long-awaited face reveal in Summer 2021, Aaryan kicked off a new era, live from Paris Fashion Week. Growing up in a time where the internet is redefining musical boundaries, Aaryan has crafted his sound by blurring the lines between genres and borrowing from his idols to reinvent his soundscape – becoming something of an “anti-pop” hero.

After nearly a 10-month hiatus following his debut project The Dark Ages, Aaryan released the anxiously anticipated single“Mania,” which was originally leaked at his Think My Heart Is Still in Paris pop-up. Backed by an army of worldwide fans, Aaryan introduced Codex, a 3-part body of work inspired by the lost files of Leonardo Da Vinci and the early renaissance.

Following the final installment of Codex, Aaryan’s 2018 single “Renegade” became one of 2022’s biggest viral moments, amassing billions of views across TikTok and InstagramRolling Stone India also crowned him as “one to watch” – a major nod of respect from his South Asian heritage.

In the midst of a career-defining moment, Aaryan performed at The GRAMMY Museum, debuting Once Upon a Time in Fucking Hollywood — an unreleased, Nirvana-esque single touching on exploitation and the life of a modern artist. With a novel sound blending grunge and R&B, Aaryan has kicked off his most ambitious era yet — one that will unfold in real-time to millions of listeners around the world.

As Aaryan Shah continues to expand his artistry across mediums, his fandom grows larger by the day, witnessing the birth of an underground superstar.

Los Angeles indie-pop vocalist KiKi Holli creates stunning and soulful music woven with intricate emotive storytelling for a truly captivating and cathartic listening experience with an eclectic musical aesthetic. Holli draws on inspiration from her rich theatrical background, as well as from iconic artists such as PRINCE, Dusty Springfield, The Cure, Stevie Nicks and Siouxsie and the Banshees.

Crafting a unique sound, KiKi Holli’s music is beautifully vulnerable and nurturing, with themes of connection, healing, personal growth, and living in the moment. If her delivery seems genuine—empathetic even—that’s because it is. She’s been there.

“You know, Amor fati — love your fate, love whatever is in front of you and embrace the moment,” she says.

Holli’s debut single was a breathtaking cover of Roxy Music’s “More Than This”, a raw and intimate version of the celebrated 80’s hit. Collaborating with acclaimed producer Ethan Allen (Throwing Muses, Tricky, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club), she was inspired to release her own version of the song in the midst of dealing with intense grief and loss.

Her first original song, “NEW HIGH” is a celebration of simple pleasures, finding solace in your happy place and a returning to love after a time of hardship. With soaring vocals singing sunshine-dipped melodies over lush and blissful pop rock soundscapes, “NEW HIGH” is a welcome sonic escape, collaborating again with Allen to create a landscape of music that pulls the listener into the neon glow of a surreal joy ride down the coast of Malibu.

“The music was inspired by long trips down the coast from Highway 10 to the PCH, a trip I take often with my husband. It helps me find my center again to see and sit by the ocean. It’s my happy place. I think that ‘NEW HIGH’ is a good song for all of us, transitioning out of our houses and from looking at each other through screens. That separation really does a number on your brain. ‘NEW HIGH’ is saying that we’re going to be all right, we’re making it through and coming out stronger,”

she explains.

Influenced by indie staples (Vampire Weekend & Arctic Monkeys) and classic singer-songwriters (Bob Dylan & Joni Mitchell), j ember seamlessly glides between indie pop grooves and alternative rock anthems. Connected through his self-deprecating tone and raw vocal delivery, the 25 year old chases nostalgia in his sound and honesty in his lyrics. As he explains it, “I want people to feel like they know me after listening to my music, at my best and at my worst.”

London artist Barny Fletcher has released radiant new single, “Intergirlactic.” The new track is a precursor to Barny’s forthcoming newmixtapeJETPACK, due out October 19. Listen to “Intergirlactic” now here

Blending slick melodic runs with a driving hip-hop pulse that creates a perfect canvas for Barny’s impeccable flow, “Intergirlactic” is the latest pop gem from the rising artist whose dexterity knows no bounds. Describing the track, Barny notes: “I was scrolling through beats made by this producer called MBWAV. I found him on Youtube. Work is crazy good. The word intergalactic itself was one that I was desperate to use before anyone else did. I was honestly surprised that Jamiroquai Or Pharrell hadn’t taken it already. I think I wrote about six songs called intergirlactic before I came to this one.” On the song’s official video, Barny adds: “The name led the way. I always thought it sounded cool, so I knew I wanted to tie in space themes along the idea of this girl who feels totally unattainable.”

Barny Fletcher has seen a meteoric rise since his debut, garnering support from BBC’s Radio 1, Australia’s Triple J, and features everywhere from a collaboration on the latest DJ Shadow album, a Euro 2020 fashion design campaign with Umbro, as well as inclusion on the soundtrack for Michaela Coel’s HBO series I May Destroy You. Today’s new single comes on the heels of previous track “Backstroke,” which landed on Spotify’s New Music Friday and has already racked up 250K Spotify plays since its release last month. Barny first started teasing the forthcoming JETPACK mixtape late last year with “Breakfast at Isabel’s,” which featured a playful video co-directed by Barny himself, and then followed with track “90s Baby” this summer.

LA based R&B dynamos Emotional Oranges make it a family affair on new single Cardigan, hooking up with their Avant Garden label mate Unusual Demont to create gorgeous new offering, Cardigan. The track fuses indie and R&B with effortless poise, serving as a  testament as to why both acts have racked up millions of streams and acclaim worldwide. Speaking on the track, Emotional Oranges explain:

“Demont sent us the initial demo idea before we went on tour in the US Fall 2021. It was equal parts cheeky and complex and pushed us to match his energy. We got inspired to drop it as a way to celebrate going back on tour together (in Australia and Asia) over the next few months!”

Unusual Demont continues:

“I made the first version of ‘Cardigan’ while on a plane from Wisconsin to LA, one of the first times I ever left home. I was actually wearing a cardigan when I wrote it, and I remember just wanting to make a really catchy hook that would be fun to sing with friends at a party or scream at a concert. I was sitting on the original version that was just my verse and hook for a really long time and one day I played it for EO and they loved it. We had been wanting to make a track together for a while because we’d been on the road so much.  We already felt such a good cross-over stylistically it just made so much sense. So when they told me they wanted to make this together I was really excited. V and A fit on it so well and brought that element to it that I felt was missing solo. I’m so glad to be able to put this out / perform this with them, and I hope you love it as much as I do!”

“The path to health and healing is often not the path of least resistance but the path of perseverance and doing the work,”  says Tom Hamilton. “The Covid times allowed me to have an emotional reckoning with myself. The bouts of depression. The crippling anxiety. Waking up every day and choosing the difficult realizations and the hard truths.”

As an only child, parts of Ada Marques’ life felt consumed by solitude. She admits that at times, to survive the vacancy, she lived in her own head, relying on her creativity for companionship.

She’s always had a distinct intimacy with music. At times, particularly when she was feeling withdrawn or invisible, her relationship with music grasped her in a distinctively unique way, replicating the connection that other people pursue with family or their best friend. Music made her feel alive and loved in a way nothing else ever had, and she couldn’t get enough of that feeling. Each night, while her aunt was away at work, Marques would sneak into her bedroom and consume each of the albums in her aunt’s CD collection. She spent hours sampling and studying albums, connecting emotionally with each artist she discovered including Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, and Stevie Nicks.  “The way they would write their stories so plainly and bluntly yet gracefully inspired me,” she admits, noting their influence on her own style of songwriting. Uncovering Taylor Swift’s debut album, Marques realized for the first time that songs don’t just happen; they’re created by musicians. Instantly, she was inspired to try to unlock her own abilities as a storyteller.

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

From that moment Marques centered her life around songwriting, first by detailing how every novel she read or movie she watched made her feel, then, as she grew up and navigated high school, boys, and the dramas surrounding both, as an outlet to control and safely release her emotions. Eventually, with some prompting from her peers, Marques found herself considering writing music for someone other than her, and telling her story publicly, a dream she had always been passionate about, but too afraid to explore because of her propensity to overthink.

Marques found herself fixating on the idea that sharing her deep-rooted fears, and the loneliness and solitude that she had experienced growing up, might propel others to lean into the reassurance she remembered needing in her life, that she eventually found in music. Compelled by the notion that she – the reclusive girl searching for her self-worth in the lyrics of songs by the female musicians she adored – might unfold and bloom into the type of artist that she  credits with her own survival, Marques, still afraid, hesitantly released her debut single, “Bell,” and her follow up “Napkin.”

Juls is a pop singer/songwriter from Connecticut, who is creating a world radiating with starry eyes, ocean blues and true love. Her love for music began at just eight years old, when her dad built a stage in the basement for Juls and her sister. Instantly recognizing that performing and singing was her calling, Juls shares, “My sister Jacqs was my presenter, and I was the star of the show, prancing onto the stage in my sparkly bodysuits and 6-inch heels (Jacqs was my stylist and makeup artist too, of course). Quite a bit has changed since then, but one thing has remained the same: our shared love for music. Well, two things actually…Jacqs still does my performance makeup lol.”

With a burning desire to pursue her musical career, and with her sister at her side as her manager, best friend and “sisager”, Juls has quickly become a force to be reckoned with. She reveals, “We once believed that the dream worlds we were creating for fun would only ever exist within the confines of our basement. However, we are now turning these dreams into our reality, and we could not be more excited to share them with you all on a bigger platform.”

Taking inspiration from the likes of Taylor Swift and Lana del Rey, Juls is back with her latest release “Heartbreaker,” blessing listeners with her ethereal euphoria and her truly deepening soundscapes. Reflecting the dazzling movements of the ocean, her music metaphorically encapsulates the highs and lows of adolescence. She explains, “I wrote the hook of this new song in my bedroom in Los Angeles last summer. I distinctly remember looking out my window and thinking about how heartbreak has a butterfly effect of sorts; people never break more hearts than when they are heartbroken because they often turn to others to ease their own pain. This person may simply be looking in another’s eyes to erase the haunting memory of the ones they are trying to forget.. in the process, the people with fresh eyes may become heartbroken and taint themselves in a cyclical and sorta achingly ironic way. So I decided to write a song about this cycle of heartbreak and heartbreaking, building off of this play on words to create the hook.”

With a throbbing baseline, Jul’s vocals roar atop stunning instrumentalism, reverberating with her synth-inspired euphoria. Reminding people of the magic in the small moments, she continues, “Music is amazing because it creates internal distance from the outside world and offers listeners a reprieve to clear their head and sink into a different moment or feeling. I hope that my music makes someone, somewhere feel heard or understood.”

Garnering over half a million streams for her music to date, Juls has received critical acclaim from the likes of Wonderland Magazine, Variance, and several Spotify editorial playlists, as she rapidly becomes an artist to watch for this year and beyond.
