You Should Have Been Here Yesterday is a visually stunning homage to the golden era of surfing, directed by Jolyon Hoff. This 80-minute documentary takes viewers on a journey through the late ’60s and ’70s, capturing the essence of a time when surfers traded city life for the freedom of the waves. Hoff, known for his dedication to surf culture, has meticulously pieced together archival footage to create a film that is both a historical document and a love letter to the surfing community.

One of the film’s strengths is its ability to transport viewers back in time. The cinematography captures the raw, unfiltered beauty of the era, far removed from today’s polished, high-definition surf videos. The film’s narrative arc takes us through the romantic late ’60s, the surf travel-obsessed ’70s, and into the corporate-branded ’80s. Each era is depicted with a sense of nostalgia and reverence, making it a moving experience for anyone who has ever felt the call of the ocean.

The soundtrack, composed of period-appropriate music, enhances the film’s nostalgic feel. It complements the visuals perfectly, creating an immersive experience that draws viewers into the world of the surfers.

You Should Have Been Here Yesterday succeeds in capturing the spirit of an era. It is less a documentary about surf movies and more a surf movie itself, filled with the joy, freedom, and occasional melancholy that comes with a life spent chasing waves.
