The Review: The Quirky Tale Led By Peter Dinklage, ‘American Dreamer’

American Dreamer is a film that captivates with its quirky humor and heartfelt story, starring Peter Dinklage and Shirley MacLaine. Directed by Paul Dektor and penned by Theodore Melfi, this movie takes a light-hearted yet moving look at the pursuit of the American dream, wrapped in the guise of a black comedy.

Peter Dinklage plays Phil Loder, an economics professor with big dreams but a wallet that doesn’t match. His life takes an unexpected turn when he stumbles upon an ad for a mansion priced at an absurdly low $240,000, with the catch that he must share the space with its current owner, Astrid Finnelli, played by Shirley MacLaine, until she passes away. The premise, inspired by a segment from “This American Life,” sets the stage for a series of comedic and sometimes chaotic events.

Dinklage brings his usual flair for portraying complex, often misunderstood characters to Phil. His performance is a blend of frustration and hope, making the audience root for him even when his actions are questionable. MacLaine is a joy to watch as Astrid, delivering her lines with the perfect mix of wit and warmth. The film’s strength lies in the chemistry between Dinklage and MacLaine. Their interactions are the heart of the movie, where each scene they share adds layers to their characters’ relationship, evolving from adversaries to almost like family.

The supporting cast, including Matt Dillon as Phil’s realtor and Danny Glover as a private investigator, adds color and humor to the story. Their roles, while not central, are pivotal in highlighting the absurdities of Phil’s journey. Matt Dillon I think was great in this, he was magnetic every time he had screen time.

American Dreamer might not be a cinematic masterpiece, but it’s a delightful watch, largely thanks to the performances of Dinklage and MacLaine. Their dynamic is the film’s saving grace, making it a charming exploration of dreams, reality, and the unexpected friendships that can emerge from the most unlikely circumstances. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the journey to achieving our dreams is as valuable as the dream itself.
