The Review: The Sparkling Tale of ‘Widow Clicquot’

From the moment the screen lights up with the lush, mist-covered vineyards of France, Widow Clicquot captures the essence of a previous era with a captivating allure. Directed by Thomas Napper, this film is a testament to resilience, innovation, and the sheer will of one woman against the odds. Haley Bennett, once again, proves her talent as an actress, delivering an outstanding performance as Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin Clicquot, the widow who became the grande dame of champagne. Her portrayal is brilliant, capturing both the vulnerability and strength of a woman navigating a man’s world in the early 19th century.

The story of Widow Clicquot unfolds focusing on Barbe-Nicole’s life following the sudden death of her husband, François Clicquot. The film cleverly uses flashbacks to flesh out their relationship, which is both poetic and tragic, thanks to Tom Sturridge’s compelling performance. However, it’s Bennett’s transformation from a grieving wife to a determined businesswoman that truly anchors the film. Her quiet determination, laced with an undercurrent of defiance, is portrayed with such authenticity that you can’t help but root for her success.

The supporting cast, including Sam Riley as Louis Bohne, adds depth to the story. Riley’s portrayal of the wine merchant brings a lightness to the film, his character’s adventures providing a counterpoint to the more serious undertones of Barbe-Nicole’s struggle.

Perhaps where Widow Clicquot could have pushed further is in exploring the political and social ramifications of Barbe-Nicole’s achievements. While it touches on these aspects, the film often opts for a more personal narrative, which, while compelling, leaves some historical depth on the table.

Widow Clicquot is a beautifully crafted film that stands out for its lead performance by Haley Bennett. Her portrayal of Barbe-Nicole is the heart of the film, turning what could have been a straightforward biopic into a resonant story about perseverance, love, and legacy.

Widow Clicquot opens at Luna Palace Cinemas from tomorrow.
