The Review: Unraveling Secrets In ‘The Stranger in My Home’

The Stranger in My Home, directed by Jeff Fisher and starring Sophia Bush, is a psychological thriller that dives headfirst into the unsettling premise of a family’s perfect life torn apart by a shocking revelation. Set to be released on June 24, 2025, this adaptation of Adele Parks’ bestselling novel delivers a blend of suspense and melodrama. Bush plays Ali Mitchell, a devoted mother whose world revolves around her teenage daughter, Katie (Amiah Miller). When a stranger, Tom Truby (Chris Carmack), arrives claiming Katie was switched at birth, the Mitchell family spirals into a web of distrust and danger. While not without flaws, the film’s energy and Bush’s commanding performance make it an entertaining guilty pleasure.

Sophia Bush anchors the film in her portrayal of Ali, a mother grappling with the unthinkable. Bush’s chemistry with Amiah Miller, who shines as Katie, grounds the story’s emotional core, emphasizing the mother-daughter bond that Bush herself described as the film’s heart. Chris Carmack, as Tom, brings a charismatic edge. The supporting cast, including Chris Johnson as Ali’s husband Jeff, delivers serviceable performances, but it’s Bush who carries the weight of the narrative.

Jeff Fisher’s direction embraces this film’s campy roots with stylistic flair, using split screens and moody lighting to create a retro, almost soap-opera vibe. Fisher’s previous work on The Image of You shows his knack for adapting Parks’ novels, and the film’s 91-minute runtime keeps the energy high, ensuring it never overstays its welcome. The Stranger in My Home touches on timely issues like social media’s role in shaping perceptions and exposing secrets. A notable scene, highlighted in interviews with Bush and Carmack, underscores how characters uncover truths through online sleuthing, reflecting real-world anxieties about digital privacy.

In the end, The Stranger in My Home is a flawed but irresistibly fun thriller that thrives on Sophia Bush’s star power. It offers 90 minutes of twists, tears, and mama-bear ferocity that will keep you hooked. For fans of soapy suspense or Bush’s charismatic presence, it’s a must-watch.
