Behind the Silver Screen: The Charm of ‘Luna, Starring’

In the heart of Perth’s vibrant cultural scene, where independent cinemas serve as beacons for film lovers, a short documentary has emerged to capture the essence of what makes these spaces so special. Luna, Starring, directed by Caitlin Kirk, offers an intimate peek behind the curtains of Luna Palace Cinemas, one of Western Australia’s most beloved arthouse venues. It premiered as part of the 2025 St Kilda Film Festival, this 10-minute gem not only celebrates the quirks and dedication of cinema staff but also shines a light on the enduring magic of indie film culture in Australia.

Caitlin Kirk, a Perth-based filmmaker and a key figure at Luna Palace itself, wears multiple hats in this production. As director and co-producer alongside Samuel Hodgson-Bertram and Alexander Haygarth, Kirk brings a personal touch to the project. The documentary, described as giving audiences “a front row seat to life behind the scenes at Luna Leederville,” explores the daily rhythms, challenges, and joys of running an independent cinema.  It’s a love letter to the venue that has been a staple in Perth since the 1920s, evolving from a single screen to a multi-site hub for arthouse releases, festivals, and community events. Kirk’s insider perspective—working at Luna herself—infuses the film with authenticity, turning what could be a straightforward profile into a heartfelt narrative about passion, perseverance, and the unsung heroes who keep the projectors rolling.

I had the privilege of watching Luna, Starring during Luna Palace Cinemas’ 30th birthday celebration, an evening that radiated pure love for film and devotion to this iconic venue. The screening was electric, with the packed audience buzzing with excitement as we toasted three decades of Luna’s legacy. The documentary left me in awe—its vibrant storytelling and heartfelt portrayal of the staff’s dedication captured the soul of Luna Leederville perfectly. The night itself was a joyous celebration, filled with shared laughter, nostalgic anecdotes, and a collective appreciation for the cinema that has shaped Perth’s cultural landscape. It was a reminder of why we gather to be transported, inspired, and connected through the magic of film.

In a time when physical cinemas face ongoing challenges, this film reminds us why these spaces matter: they are stages where stories come alive, staffed by people whose dedication turns reels into real connections. For film buffs in Perth and beyond, Luna, Starring isn’t just a documentary—it’s a starring role for the unsung heart of Australian cinema.
