The Review: ‘Relay’ – A Smart, Suspenseful Techno-Thriller That Redefines The Genre

Relay, directed by David Mackenzie, is a pulse-pounding return to the techno-conspiracy thriller, a genre that has been dormant for far too long. Starring Riz Ahmed, Lily James, and Sam Worthington, this film is a masterclass in tension, weaving a smartly written screenplay by Justin Piasecki that feels refreshingly modern. From its opening moments, the film grabs you and doesn’t let go, delivering a narrative that is as intelligent as it is thrilling.

Riz Ahmed shines as Ash, a meticulous “fixer” who brokers high-stakes payoffs between corrupt corporations and whistleblowers threatening to expose them. His character operates in a shadowy world of communication, using a tri-state relay system—a call center for deaf clients—to maintain his anonymity. This ingenious plot device, where operators act as liasons for phone conversations, is a stroke of brilliance in Piasecki’s screenplay, turning mundane phone calls into high-stakes chess moves.

Lily James delivers a standout performance as Sarah, a whistleblower who uncovers dangerous secrets about a powerful company’s new crop strain. Unlike the classic heroes of conspiracy thrillers, Sarah is driven by survival, not heroism, which makes her relatable and human. Her chemistry with Ahmed is magentic, particularly in scenes where their characters must trust each other despite the ever-present threat of betrayal. James’ ability to modulate between fear and determination elevates Sarah beyond the damsel-in-distress archetype, making her a vital part of the film’s emotional core.

Sam Worthington rounds out the trio as Dawson, the smug leader of the corporate operative team tasked with stopping Sarah. Worthington brings a menacing charisma to the role, making Dawson a formidable villain who is both calculating and unpredictable.

What sets Relay apart is its screenplay, which is very intelligently written. Piasecki crafts a narrative that is intricate and accessible, balancing the technical details of Ash’s relay system with the emotional stakes of Sarah’s predicament. Unlike some reviews that criticize the script for piling on twists, I found the final act’s surprises to be cleverly foreshadowed and satisfyingly executed. Each twist forces the audience to reevaluate earlier scenes, adding layers to the characters and their motivations.

The relay system itself is a narrative triumph, a unique storytelling device that feels both retro and cutting-edge. By using a call center to mask his identity, Ash’s methodical approach to his work becomes a fascinating puzzle for the audience to unravel. This inventive system not only drives the plot but also serves as a metaphor for the film’s themes of anonymity and trust in a world where surveillance is global.

Relay is a must-see for fans of smart, suspenseful cinema. Riz Ahmed and Lily James deliver career-defining performances, supported by a tight script and Mackenzie’s deft direction. The film’s innovative use of the relay system, combined with its sharp commentary and relentless tension, makes it a standout in the thriller genre. Catch it at Luna Palace Cinemas on August 21, 2025—you won’t be disappointed.
