INsiders Guide Interview with Abbey Anderson

Your track “Dear Ex Lover” has resonated with many listeners. Can you share the story behind the song and what inspired you to write it?

My latest single, “Dear Ex-Lover,” wasn’t written about one person in particular, as most people would probably expect. The song is about being in any type of relationship (friends, significant other, etc.) and knowing deep down in your heart that even though you love that person so much, at the end of the day, they’re not good for you. Some people just aren’t meant to be in our lives, no matter how much you want them to be. I was inspired to write it not just for other people to relate to, but also to gain closure within myself and acceptance of the fact that sometimes you aren’t the problem and you shouldn’t have to ever beg someone to love you.

How do you approach blending different musical styles in your work, and what influences your sound?

I approach blending different musical styles with an open mind and open ear. I also continuously search for new music and artists to listen to that inspire my own work and sound. I feel I’m heavily influenced by artists such as Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo and Gracie Abrams. All of their music is so relatable, and it just makes me want to listen to it over and over again. They really inspire me to create music that’s real and raw and use unique sounds that are interesting to listen to.

What themes do you find yourself drawn to in your songwriting, and how do they reflect your personal experiences?

I often find myself drawn to themes of growing up, love, loss, and self-discovery when writing. These themes reflect my personal experiences in relationships and observation of the world and people around me. I always strive to create memorable and relatable lyrics that can connect to people of any age all around the world. By expressing my thoughts and feelings honestly and with an open heart I’m able to connect with listeners on a deeper level and create music that resonates with my audience.

Can you describe a memorable moment from your journey as an artist that has shaped your music or perspective?

I have taken a few vocal and piano lessons over the years but never fully pursued music. Being a competitive dancer, it didn’t allow me a lot of extra time to do other things. However, I always loved music and singing since I was very young and one late night I got up and wrote Dear Ex-Lover. The next day I played it on piano and sang it for my family and Aunts and Uncle. They loved it, some were in tears and that moment made me realize not only that I can do this but how much I want to do this. It gave me the confidence to know I can write music and put it out there for others to relate to and enjoy.

As you continue to evolve as an artist, what new directions or collaborations are you excited to explore in the future?

As I continue to evolve as an artist I’m very excited to continue to release more music with Roy Hamilton III. I have my second single coming out in June and a few more songs already written and ready to go. I want to create some music videos as well and start to perform infront of crowds. I’m hoping with a bit more exposure I can gain more fans and eventually release my first album.
