The Review: Why ‘Lesbian Space Princess’ Is the Queer Comedy We’ve Been Waiting For

In a galaxy not so far away, where rainbows power starships and labrys axes double as lightsabers, Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese blast onto the scene with their debut feature, Lesbian Space Princess. This 2025 Australian animated sci-fi comedy is an explosion of action, color, and comedy that had me and my fellow viewers doubled over in laughter from the opening credits. As the introverted Princess Saira of Clitopolis embarks on a quest to rescue her bounty-hunting ex, Kiki, from the hilariously villainous Straight White Maliens, the film delivers a fresh, unapologetic take on queer love.

Right from the start, the animation style is a feast for the eyes—vibrant, hand-drawn with slick VFX. Hough Hobbs, an artist at heart, and Varghese, with her Tropfest-winning chops, craft a visual universe where every frame pops with personality. The voice cast is nothing short of stellar, with Shabana Azeez bringing a perfect mix of vulnerability and sass to Saira, the needy princess who’s all heart and zero chill. The villains, Straight White Maliens, are a stroke of satirical genius—bumbling baddies whose outdated male chauvinism crumbles under the weight of their own absurdity.

What truly elevates Lesbian Space Princess is its razor-sharp script, penned by the dynamic duo of Hough Hobbs and Varghese. Every joke lands like a well-aimed photon torpedo—puns on queer icons, sly digs at heteronormative tropes, and meta gags about space clichés. The breakup scene between Saira and Kiki? A masterclass in awkward hilarity. It’s funny because it’s true, capturing the messy beauty of queer relationships in a way that’s refreshingly honest and side-splittingly relatable.

Lesbian Space Princess is the funniest, freshest ride through the stars you’ll take this side of the asteroid belt. If you crave a comedy that celebrates queer joy with zero apologies, then warp speed to Luna Palace Cinemas. Hough Hobbs and Varghese, you’ve launched a franchise we desperately need more of.

Lesbian Space Princess is out now at Luna Palace Cinemas.
