The Review: Anaconda’s Fresh Take Bites Just Right!

This clever reimagining of the ’90s cult classic, Anaconda transforms a snake-infested thriller into a sidesplitting comedy about friendship, mid-life mishaps, and the chaos of chasing nostalgia. Jack Black and Paul Rudd lead the charge as a pair of buddies grappling with their forties, deciding to remake their beloved childhood movie in the actual jungle—what could go wrong? Spoiler: everything, in the most entertaining way possible.

From the get-go, the chemistry between Black and Rudd is electric, reminiscent of their best buddy-comedy vibes but cranked up with snappy banter and genuine heart. Black brings his signature manic energy, belting out improvised songs and physical gags that had the theater roaring, while Rudd’s everyman charm grounds the absurdity, making their mid-life crisis feel relatable and hilarious. The supporting cast, including Thandiwe Newton and Steve Zahn, adds layers of wit, turning what could have been a simple snake chase into a heartfelt ode to rediscovering adventure.

The meta premise is a stroke of genius—friends fumbling through a DIY remake while dodging real dangers like massive CGI serpents and jungle perils. It’s harmless fun with a fresh spin on the familiar formula, packed with laugh-out-loud moments that embrace the bonkers spirit of the original without taking itself too seriously. Sure, the effects aren’t groundbreaking, but they serve the comedy perfectly, heightening the self-aware silliness.

Overall, Anaconda is a delightful escape that’s equal parts thrilling and comedic gold. If you’re in the mood for a feel-good romp that celebrates friendship and folly, slither your way to the theater. Highly recommended for anyone needing a dose of joyful chaos!

Anaconda arrives in cinemas 26 December 2025.
