Netflix has unveiled the first teaser trailer for Steps, a new animated musical that puts a very different spin on the classic Cinderella fairy tale.
Rather than focusing solely on Cinderella, Steps shifts the spotlight to her misunderstood stepsisters and introduces a colourful new adventure filled with magic, musical numbers, comedy and plenty of fantasy-fuelled chaos.
The film features an impressive voice cast led by Ali Wong as Lilith, one of Cinderella’s stepsisters, while Amanda Seyfried voices Cinderella. Daniel Radcliffe, Stephanie Hsu, Nikki Glaser, Young Mazino, Peter Dinklage, Bette Midler and WWE superstar Damian Priest are also part of the ensemble.
The story follows Lilith, who has grown tired of constantly living in Cinderella’s shadow. Her attempt to change her circumstances takes a disastrous turn when she steals the Fairy Godmother’s magical wand and, alongside her sister Margot, hijacks the Royal Ball.
Things quickly spiral out of control, leaving the kingdom under the rule of the tyrannical Priscilla. With the fate of the kingdom hanging in the balance, Lilith is forced to put her differences with Cinderella aside and work alongside her former rival.
Their unlikely journey will see the sisters battle biker trolls, evade dangerous henchmen and venture into the mysterious Screaming Woods as they attempt to repair their fractured fairy tale.
At the centre of the adventure is the evolving relationship between Lilith and Cinderella, with the film promising to explore the idea that characters traditionally viewed as villains may have more to their stories than audiences realise.
The teaser also gives viewers a glimpse at the film’s vibrant animation, energetic musical sequences and irreverent approach to the familiar Cinderella mythology. Its tagline certainly sets the tone: “An unexpected tale that will shatter all expectations.”
Steps is directed by Alyce Tzue and John Ripa, with Amy Poehler producing alongside Jane Hartwell and Kim Lessing. The story was developed by Ava Tramer, James Madejski, Dana Schwartz, Felicia Ho, Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci.
Netflix has scheduled Steps to premiere globally on November 20, 2026.
