Steven Spielberg to Lead Creative Direction on New Transformers Film as Michael Bay Eyes Return

Paramount Pictures and Hasbro are moving forward with plans to bring the Transformers franchise back to the big screen, and the next installment could reunite several of the key figures behind the series’ early success.

According to sources, Paramount has tapped Steven Spielberg to oversee the creative direction of the next live-action Transformers movie alongside longtime producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Michael Bay is also in early negotiations to return to the franchise as director.

Spielberg will remain attached as an executive producer while taking on a more hands-on creative role for what is expected to be the eighth live-action Transformers film. He previously held a similar position on the first two movies, which launched the franchise in 2007 and helped turn Hasbro’s toy line into a global entertainment phenomenon.

The Transformers series has earned more than $5.4 billion at the worldwide box office. For the new chapter, Spielberg and di Bonaventura are expected to help steer the film in a direction that captures the spirit of the original movies.

Mark Vahradian, Don Murphy, Tom DeSanto and Hasbro will also serve as producers.

The film is currently being developed from a screenplay by Jason Fuchs. Specific plot details remain under wraps, although the story is known to be set in the modern day. With the project still in the early stages of development, no cast members have been announced.

Since the first Transformers opened in theaters in the summer of 2007, the franchise has become one of Paramount’s most valuable properties. Spielberg, Bay and di Bonaventura were instrumental in the success of the original film, with Spielberg reportedly identifying Bay as his choice to direct it.

Bay and di Bonaventura would go on to serve as the franchise’s primary creative forces through the next four installments, while Spielberg took a less hands-on role as an executive producer.

Bay eventually stepped away from the series following 2017’s Transformers: The Last Knight. The franchise continued with Bumblebee in 2018 and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts in 2023. While both films received a more mixed response, neither managed to match the impact or box-office performance of the earlier installments.

Paramount’s leadership is now looking to change that.

Following the completion of the Skydance merger in August 2025, newly appointed Paramount Pictures co-chairs Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg made revitalizing the Transformers franchise a priority. One of their first meetings with Spielberg after taking over was reportedly focused on a number of topics, including the future of Transformers.

That relationship continued to develop over the following year. Spielberg ultimately agreed to take on a more active role in the next film after reading the latest version of Fuchs’ screenplay.

With Spielberg guiding the creative vision and Bay potentially returning to the director’s chair, Paramount appears to be betting on the filmmakers who helped establish Transformers as one of Hollywood’s biggest blockbuster franchises to lead its next era.
