A beloved horror film from the 1980s is set to be rebooted by an unexpected producer. According to a recent report from Deadline, the cult classic slasher Sleepaway Camp is getting a remake. The rights to the project were recently acquired by AFA, the production company founded by SNL alum Keenan Thompson and Johnny Ryan Jr.

Remarkably, Robert Hiltzik, the original writer and director of Sleepaway Camp, will return to oversee the remake. He will once again serve as writer and director, although details about the remake’s plot and content remain undisclosed at this time.

Sleepaway Camp was originally released in 1983 and centers around a series of mysterious deaths at a summer camp. The film is particularly famous for its shocking twist ending, revealing that the killer is actually the seemingly shy protagonist, Angela. Born as Peter, Angela was forced to be raised as “Angela” by her eccentric Aunt Martha after her sister’s tragic death in a boating accident. Angela later becomes a camp counselor in subsequent films — and accumulates a notable body count along the way. The ending is considered one of the most surprising in horror history, contributing to the film’s enduring cult status, especially among queer audiences. The franchise expanded with four sequels, the latest being Sleepaway Camp IV: The Survivor, released in 2012.
