Teaser Trailer: James Gunn & DC Debut Milly Alcock as ‘Supergirl’

On January 31st, 2023, James Gunn announced that a Supergirl solo film would be part of the upcoming DC Universe (DCU) lineup, revealing the project in a video titled “DC Studios Announcement – Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters | DC.” The film is set to adapt the “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” comic series, which is told from the perspective of Ruthye Marye Knoll, an alien girl seeking justice for her father, who was killed by Krem of the Yellow Hills. Although Kara initially hesitates to get involved, she eventually joins Ruthye’s quest after Krem shoots Krypto with a poisonous arrow. Together, the trio embarks on a mission to find Krem and the antidote before it’s too late.

Craig Gillespie is directing the movie, with Ana Nogueira writing the screenplay. In the casting process for Supergirl, four contenders—Milly Alcock, Emilia Jones, Cailee Spaeny, and Meg Donnelly—were considered in January 2024. Ultimately, Milly Alcock was selected for the role later that month.

In September of the same year, Matthias Schoenaerts was cast as the film’s main villain, Krem of the Yellow Hills, and in October, Eve Ridley was cast as Ruthye Marye Knoll. Additionally, Jason Momoa is set to portray the alien bounty hunter Lobo.

This solo film marks Supergirl’s first standalone appearance in the DCU, although the character, Kara Zor-El, was initially introduced at the end of the “Superman” movie in July, when she arrived at the Fortress of Solitude to pick up Krypto, who Clark had been babysitting. Supergirl also made a brief cameo alongside Superman and the Justice Gang during a recap segment in the season 2 premiere of “Peacemaker,” specifically in Episode 1, titled “The Ties That Grind.”
