The Review: Justin Timberlake’s ‘Everything I Thought I Was’

Justin Timberlake’s latest album, Everything I Thought I Was, marks a reflective journey through his storied career, blending nostalgia with contemporary sounds. The album opens with “Memphis,” a track that immediately sets the tone with its minimalist trap production and introspective lyrics. Timberlake’s return to his Tennessee roots is palpable as he ruminates on the pressures and promises of early fame. This track, while a bold opener, feels somewhat disjointed as Timberlake transitions from singing to rapping, a shift that might catch longtime fans off guard.

The album’s production is a testament to Timberlake’s ability to evolve while staying true to his roots. Tracks like “Echoes of Yesterday” and “Neon Nights” showcase his signature falsetto, layered over futuristic beats that harken back to the FutureSex/LoveSounds era. These songs are where Timberlake shines, blending his past successes with a modern twist. However, not all tracks hit the mark. “Lost in Translation” and “Faded Memories” feel like filler, lacking the punch and charisma that Timberlake is known for.

Lyrically, Everything I Thought I Was is a mixed bag. Timberlake delves into themes of self-reflection, regret, and redemption. In “Mirrors of the Soul,” he confronts his past mistakes with a raw honesty that is both refreshing and poignant. Yet, some tracks, like “City Lights,” fall into the trap of generic pop clichés, diluting the album’s overall impact. It’s clear that Timberlake is trying to balance introspection with mainstream appeal, but the execution is uneven.

One of the standout tracks is “Timeless,” a collaboration with Pharrell Williams. The song’s infectious groove and catchy chorus make it an instant hit, reminiscent of Timberlake’s earlier collaborations with The Neptunes. “Timeless” is a reminder of Timberlake’s ability to craft pop perfection when he’s in his element. The best track on the album for me is Love & War, which is written and produced by Timberlake and Timbaland to pure perfection.

The album’s production quality is top-notch, with contributions from long-time collaborators like Timbaland, Danja, Cirkut, Ryan Tedder, James Fauntleroy, Rob Knox and also some new faces in the industry. The beats are polished, and the instrumentation is rich, creating a lush soundscape that is a pleasure to listen to. Timberlake’s vocal performance is as strong as ever, showcasing his versatility and range. His falsetto is still a highlight, and he effortlessly transitions between different styles and genres.

Everything I Thought I Was is a nostalgic trip down memory lane, but it also looks forward, attempting to redefine Timberlake’s place in the current music landscape. While it doesn’t quite reach the heights of his earlier work, it is a commendable effort that showcases his growth as an artist. Everything I Thought I Was is an album that will resonate with long-time fans while offering something new for a younger audience. It’s a blend of introspection and pop sensibility, with moments of brilliance that remind us why Timberlake remains a force in the music industry.
