Exciting news for fans of high-octane action: Miramax’s sequel to The Beekeeper has gotten a significant update on its progress. This development arrives more than a year following the original film’s theatrical debut, which raked in over $162 million worldwide.
Indonesian director Timo Tjahjanto took to Instagram to announce that filming for The Beekeeper 2, starring Jason Statham, is officially underway. His post included a photo of a clapperboard from the set, giving fans their first glimpse at the movie’s new logo.
Tjahjanto is helming the project, working from a script penned by Kurt Wimmer. Statham returns in the lead role, joined by Oscar winner Jeremy Irons reprising his character, Wallace Westwyld. Newcomer to the franchise Yara Shahidi, known from Grown-ish, has been cast in a role that’s still shrouded in secrecy. Beyond acting, Statham is also on board as a producer under his Punch Palace Productions label, alongside Wimmer and Chris Long. Amazon MGM Studios is handling production and distribution, with Miramax providing the financing.
Tjahjanto brings a wealth of experience in action filmmaking, having directed Indonesian hits like 2016’s Headshot, 2018’s The Night Comes for Us, 2022’s The Big 4, and the recent The Shadow Strays. Just prior to this, he wrapped up directing Nobody 2, the follow-up to the 2021 thriller starring Bob Odenkirk.
