Cynthia Erivo from Wicked has joined the cast of another fantasy musical film.
Erivo gained recognition for her portrayal of Elphaba Thropp in the 2024 release of Wicked, alongside co-star Ariana Grande. She is also set to reprise her role in the upcoming sequel, titled Wicked: For Good, which is scheduled to premiere next month.
Via Twitter, it was announced that Erivo has also become part of the cast for an animated fantasy musical called Bad Fairies. The project, revealed in 2024, is directed by Megan Nicole Dong, known for creating Netflix’s animated musical series Centaurworld. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film’s songs will be written by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, with Isabella Summers composing the score. The story revolves around a “delightfully subversive gang of fairies” who challenge their magical world. Erivo lends her voice to Jayne Stapleton, a fairy whose rebellious nature ignites a rebellion.
Olivier Staphylas is co-directing Bad Fairies, with Deborah Frances-White handling the screenplay. Carolyn Soper is producing the film for Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Locksmith, while DNEG Animation is providing digital support.
Erivo’s portrayal of Elphaba earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress last year. She was also nominated in 2019 for her role in Harriet. Her film credits include Widows (2018), Bad Times at the El Royale (2018), Chaos Walking (2021), Needle in a Timestack (2021), Pinocchio (2022), Drift (2023), and Luther: The Fallen Sun (2023). On television, she has appeared in series such as The Outsider, Poker Face, and Big Mouth, among others. Bad Fairies is set to be released in U.S. theaters on May 21, 2027, by Warner Bros. Pictures. The only other film scheduled for the same release date is Wes Ball’s The Legend of Zelda, a project developed for Columbia Pictures and Nintendo.
