The Review: A Heartfelt Highland Reunion – ‘Glenrothan’

featuring @rialtodistributionau @lunapalacecinemas

Brian Cox’s directorial debut, Glenrothan, is a warm, earnest drama that proves the enduring power of a well-told family story. Set against the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands and centered on a family whisky distillery, the film follows estranged brothers as they confront their shared past, lingering resentments, and the pull of home.

What truly elevates Glenrothan is its narrative. I love a good story, and this one delivers—a thoughtful exploration of reconciliation, forgiveness, and the complicated ties that bind families. The brotherly bond at its heart resonated with me on a personal level, capturing the dramas, misunderstandings, and quiet affections that define sibling relationships. Even if those specific dynamics don’t mirror your own experiences, there’s plenty here to enjoy: the universal themes of returning home, mending what’s broken, and finding strength in heritage.

The performances are outstanding across the board. Brian Cox brings a grounded, burly presence to his role, while Alan Cumming delivers a nuanced and resonant turn as the returning brother. Their chemistry spark with years of unresolved tension and underlying love, making the emotional confrontations land powerfully. Supporting players like Shirley Henderson add a much needed touch of warmth.

Glenrothan isn’t reinventing the family drama wheel, and it wears its heartfelt intentions on its sleeve. But in a landscape full of cynicism, its sincerity and honesty are refreshing. If you appreciate stories about family, forgiveness, and the enduring pull of home—delivered with top-tier acting, stunning visuals, and a moving score—this one is well worth your time.
