Paul Dano Joins Star-Studded Cast of Remake of Classic Horror Film “Possession”

Paul Dano has been cast in the upcoming remake of the psychological horror drama “Possession,” produced by Paramount Pictures. The original film, directed by Andrzej Żuławski and released in 1981, starred Sam Neill and Isabelle Adjani, and is renowned for its intense storytelling and surreal visuals.

Dano, known for his roles in “There Will Be Blood” and the 2022 film “The Batman,” joins a talented cast that includes Callum Turner and Margaret Qualley. The remake is helmed by writer-director Parker Finn, who gained acclaim for creating the horror franchise “Smile,” including the 2022 debut film and its 2024 sequel. Finn also wrote and directed both movies.

Earlier reports from Nexus Point News indicated that Dano was in talks to star in the project, and his casting confirms his involvement.

Details about the plot of the remake remain closely guarded. The original story centered on Mark, played by Sam Neill, an international spy, and his wife Anna, portrayed by Isabelle Adjani. The narrative explores their strained relationship after Mark returns to their West Berlin home and discovers Anna’s infidelity. As the story unfolds, Anna exhibits increasingly disturbing behavior. The original cast also featured Margit Carstensen, Heinz Bennent, Johanna Hofer, Carl Duering, Shaun Lawton, and Michael Hogben.

While “Possession” underperformed at the box office, earning about $1.1 million, it received largely positive reviews from critics and holds an 87% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Initially, Robert Pattinson was attached to the project as a producer and potential star, which would have marked a reunion with Dano following “The Batman.” However, it appears Pattinson will not appear in the remake, though he remains involved as a producer through his company, Bad Feeling, alongside Finn, Roy Lee, and Andrew Childs of Vertigo.

As of now, the remake does not have an official release date.
