The beloved 2003 romantic comedy How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is officially getting a sequel, with original star Kate Hudson attached to produce and hopes that she and Matthew McConaughey will return to their iconic roles.
According to Variety, Paramount is developing a follow-up to the hit rom-com, which starred Hudson as advice columnist Andie Anderson and McConaughey as advertising executive Benjamin Barry. The studio is reportedly hoping to bring the pair back for another round, although their representatives have not yet commented on the project.
The sequel remains in the early stages of development, and Paramount is currently searching for a screenwriter. Several other key creative positions and casting decisions have yet to be finalized. Plot details are also being kept under wraps.
Hudson will co-produce the sequel alongside Stacey Sher, whose producing credits include Pulp Fiction and Vanilla Sky. The original film was directed by Donald Petrie and centered on Andie and Benjamin as they enter into competing schemes that ultimately lead them to fall in love.
Despite receiving a modest 42% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days has remained one of the most recognizable romantic comedies of the 2000s and has developed a strong fan following over the years.
Hudson previously addressed the possibility of a sequel during an interview with BuzzFeed UK in January. She revealed that the idea comes up regularly between her and McConaughey, but stressed that they would only return if the right story came together.
“It’s one of those things that comes up all the time,” Hudson said, noting that she and McConaughey often ask each other whether they should make another film. She added that “it just has to be right,” suggesting that a reunion could happen if the project comes together in the right way.
For now, fans will have to wait for more details as How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days 2 moves through development. If Hudson and McConaughey ultimately reprise their roles, the sequel could reunite one of the most memorable rom-com pairings of the 2000s.
