To mark the 25th anniversary of the cult classic Donnie Darko, filmmaker Richard Kelly is preparing to expand the story with a massive new sequel novel, Donnie Darko: The Philosophy of Time Travel, arriving in late 2026.
Written by Kelly himself, the approximately 800-page novel will be set in 1988, shortly after the events of the original film, which famously concluded with the death of Jake Gyllenhaal’s troubled teenage protagonist.
According to Variety, the story will explore the 14 months following Donnie’s death, filling in what Kelly describes as essential pieces of the larger Donnie Darko mythology.
But the novel could be just the beginning. Kelly is reportedly using the project as a launching point for a much larger plan to bring Donnie Darko back to the screen. His vision includes adapting the novel into an animated and motion-capture film before eventually moving into a live-action sequel that jumps 28 years into the future.
That ambitious project could potentially reunite the original cast, something Kelly considers essential to continuing the story.
“My caveat with doing a real sequel was that I want to reunite the original cast, and I want to take it onto a gigantic scale,” Kelly explained. He acknowledged that such an undertaking would be expensive and complicated, potentially requiring multiple films to tell the story properly.
As Kelly continued developing the sequel, however, he realised that the story needed to travel backwards before it could move forward.
“I needed to go back in time and away from the sequel, and tell the story of what happens in the 14 months after Donnie’s death,” he explained. That led him to the idea of turning this portion of the story into a novel and releasing it as the first major piece of his planned continuation.
Kelly sees the novel as the “final puzzle piece” needed to launch the next chapter of Donnie Darko and discover where the story could ultimately go.
This won’t be the first time the franchise has attempted to continue Donnie’s story. S. Darko, released in 2009, served as a follow-up to the original film but was made without Kelly’s involvement and was poorly received by fans and critics.
With Kelly now back at the helm, Donnie Darko: The Philosophy of Time Travel could offer fans the continuation they have been waiting for — while potentially opening the door to an entirely new Donnie Darko film saga.
