Prime Video has unveiled the official trailer for The Love Hypothesis, its upcoming romantic comedy starring Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman. The new footage offers a glimpse at a fake-dating setup that could appeal to fans of classic rom-coms such as The Proposal.
Based on Ali Hazelwood’s New York Times bestselling novel of the same name, The Love Hypothesis brings the popular 2021 romance to the screen. The book became a viral sensation following its release and has since developed a large fanbase.
Claire Scanlon directs the film from a screenplay by Sarah Rothschild. Elizabeth Cantillon produces through her Cantillon Company banner, with Amazon MGM Studios and MRC behind the project. Laura Karpman composed the score, reuniting with Scanlon after previously collaborating on the 2018 romantic comedy Set It Up.
What Is The Love Hypothesis About?
The story centers on Olive, played by Reinhart, a brilliant Ph.D. candidate who is intensely focused on her academic career. Her carefully structured life takes an unexpected turn when she learns that her best friend, Ahn, portrayed by Rachel Marsh, has developed feelings for Olive’s former crush, Jeremy, played by Nicholas Duvernay.
Wanting to convince Ahn that she has moved on, Olive impulsively kisses Adam Carlsen, an intimidating biology professor played by Bateman.
The unexpected kiss soon evolves into an unusual arrangement. Olive and Adam agree to pretend they are dating, establishing their own set of rules and boundaries to make the fake relationship believable.
“I accept your proposal to deceive your friend into believing that I’m your love interest,” Adam says in the trailer.
“Sounds really bad when you put it like that,” Olive replies.
As the pair continue their charade, however, their carefully planned arrangement begins to fall apart. What starts as a convenient fake relationship gradually develops into something neither of them expected.
With genuine feelings entering the equation, Olive is forced to confront a much bigger question: Can she take the same risks in love that she takes in her academic life?
The Love Hypothesis Cast
Alongside Reinhart and Bateman, the cast includes Jaboukie Young-White, Arty Froushan, Laura Paolillo, Jeananne Goossen, and others.
The Love Hypothesis is scheduled to premiere exclusively on Prime Video on September 23, 2026.
