Netflix has released the official trailer for Avedon, Ron Howard’s upcoming documentary exploring the life, career, and artistic legacy of legendary American photographer Richard Avedon. The film is already generating Oscar buzz ahead of its release, offering audiences an intimate look at one of the most influential figures in fashion and portrait photography.

Directed by Howard, the documentary celebrates Avedon’s groundbreaking body of work, from his iconic portraits to his lasting influence on the worlds of fashion, art, and visual culture.

The film premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival on May 17 as part of the Special Screenings section, where it competed for the L’Œil d’or documentary award. It also made its North American debut at the 53rd Telluride Film Festival before heading to Netflix for its worldwide streaming release.

Avedon Trailer Highlights the Photographer’s Extraordinary Legacy

Running for just over two minutes, the newly released trailer offers a glimpse into Avedon’s remarkable six-decade career. Featuring personal archives, behind-the-scenes footage, and new interviews with those who knew and worked alongside him, the documentary examines how the photographer transformed the way the world sees fashion, celebrities, and society.

Throughout the trailer, collaborators and contemporaries reflect on Avedon’s revolutionary approach to photography, with one voice summing up his influence in three powerful words: “He changed everything.”

The documentary features appearances and insights from Avedon’s son, John Avedon, fashion designer Calvin Klein, art dealer Larry Gagosian, actress Isabella Rossellini, supermodel Twiggy, and model Lauren Hutton. Their recollections help paint a fuller picture of the artist, his creative vision, and the profound impact he had on generations of photographers and artists.

Beyond Fashion: Avedon’s Social and Political Photography

While Avedon became internationally renowned for his fashion photography and striking celebrity portraits, Howard’s documentary also explores the photographer’s commitment to documenting the social and political realities of his time.

The trailer highlights his work covering the Civil Rights Movement and anti-Vietnam War protests, alongside portraits of influential historical figures, including Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. These images reveal another dimension of Avedon’s career, demonstrating how his camera became a tool for capturing not only beauty and fame but also struggle, change, and human emotion.

The film also examines Avedon’s distinctive ability to encourage celebrities and public figures to move beyond their carefully maintained public personas. By capturing moments of vulnerability and authenticity, he created portraits that often revealed far more than appearances alone could convey.

From his influential years at Harper’s Bazaar to his celebrated fashion campaigns, intimate portraits, and documentary projects, Avedon traces the evolution of an artist whose work helped redefine modern photography.

When Does Avedon Release on Netflix?

Ron Howard’s Avedon will begin streaming worldwide on Netflix on November 11, 2026.

With its combination of rare archival material, firsthand reflections, and an exploration of photography’s cultural significance, the documentary promises an illuminating portrait of an artist whose influence continues to shape fashion, art, and visual storytelling.
