Taraji P. Henson is set to lead Whiskey Matriarch, a new drama series in development at Amazon, with the acclaimed actress also stepping behind the scenes as an executive producer. The project has reportedly landed at the streamer following a competitive bidding process, having previously been developed at Universal Television.
Created by screenwriter Alesia Dangerfield, Whiskey Matriarch is keeping its storyline under wraps for now, with further details about the series yet to be revealed.
The series brings together a creative team featuring Blackmaled, Henson’s TPH Entertainment and Third Road Production. Dangerfield will write and executive produce the project, joined by sisters Attica Locke and Tembi Locke, who will also contribute as writers and executive producers.
Malcolm D. Lee is attached to direct and executive produce, alongside Dominique Telson for Blackmaled. Henson and Jamila Jordan will executive produce through TPH Entertainment.
The project marks another major television development for Henson, whose career spans acclaimed performances across film and television. She recently reunited with longtime collaborator Tyler Perry for Netflix’s Why Did I Get Married Again? and made her Broadway debut earlier this year in August Wilson’s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, appearing alongside Cedric the Entertainer.
Henson is also set to appear in the upcoming Netflix project Give Me Some Sugah, directed by Tasha Smith. Beyond her acting work, the star continues to expand her production slate through TPH Entertainment, which has a first-look television deal with Fox Entertainment Studios and a two-picture film agreement with Netflix.
Her production company has also earned recognition for its documentary work. Darlene Love: I Know Where I’ve Been, produced under the TPH banner, recently won the People’s Choice Documentary Award at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival.
Behind the scenes, Whiskey Matriarch also reunites Henson with established creative talent. Attica Locke previously worked with the actress on Fox’s hit musical drama Empire, while Attica and Tembi Locke are known for co-creating Netflix’s romantic drama From Scratch, starring Zoe Saldaña. The sisters are currently involved in Peacock’s adaptation of Before I Let Go, serving as co-showrunners, writers and executive producers.
Lee brings considerable experience to the project, having directed films including The Best Man, Girls Trip and Night School. His involvement adds another established filmmaker to the growing creative team.
With Henson leading the project both on screen and behind the scenes, Whiskey Matriarch adds another intriguing title to Amazon’s developing television slate. While the series’ premise, additional casting and potential release date remain undisclosed, its combination of established talent and an experienced production team makes it a project worth watching as further details emerge.
