The line between finding freedom and losing control begins to blur in The Liberation, the upcoming psychological drama from filmmaker Guy Nattiv. Starring Carrie Coon, Lily James, Bella Ramsey and Odessa Young, the film explores the disturbing consequences of a woman’s search for healing when she becomes entangled in a secretive all-female community.
Set in the early 1980s, The Liberation follows Rita Cooper (Coon), a wife, mother and bank worker whose life is shaped by the trauma she carries as a Holocaust survivor. When she encounters Ricki (James), a charismatic spiritual leader, Rita is introduced to a community that promises acceptance, connection and a fresh start. However, what initially appears to be an opportunity for personal freedom gradually reveals a far more sinister side.
As Rita becomes increasingly devoted to the group, she begins distancing herself from her husband and daughters. Concerned about their mother’s sudden transformation, daughters Ella (Ramsey) and Jo (Young) set out to bring her home. Their efforts lead them into the world of the commune, where they discover just how powerful Ricki’s influence has become.
With its exploration of manipulation, psychological control and the complicated nature of trauma, The Liberation examines how vulnerable people can be drawn towards those who promise to understand them. The story also raises questions about the cost of seeking belonging and the difficulty of rescuing someone who believes they have finally found where they belong.
