Joel Coen and Frances McDormand are lending their support to The Bend in the River, an upcoming Netflix documentary that explores friendship, aging, and the passage of time. Directed by Robb Moss, the 82-minute film follows five longtime friends whose lives he has captured over nearly five decades, offering an intimate look at how their perspectives, relationships, and priorities have changed through the years.
The official trailer has been released, giving viewers a first look at the documentary, which is already generating Oscar buzz ahead of its Netflix debut. Coen and McDormand serve as executive producers on the project.
The story begins in 1978, when Moss first filmed his friends during a clothing-optional rafting adventure through the Grand Canyon. At the time, the group embraced a carefree outdoor lifestyle, living rent-free and enjoying a sense of freedom before the responsibilities of adulthood began to shape their lives.
Moss returned to document their experiences in 2003, capturing a very different stage of their journeys. By then, the friends had moved beyond their youthful adventures and were navigating the challenges and responsibilities of middle age. The footage reveals how their circumstances, ambitions, and outlooks had evolved over the years.
The documentary’s latest footage was filmed in 2025, when the five friends were in their 70s. Looking back on their lives, they reflect on the decisions they made, the experiences that shaped them, and the meaning they have found along the way. One particularly memorable moment in the trailer features a reflection on growing older: “One of the perks of getting older is letting go of prosperity, happiness, and success.”
Rather than presenting the story in chronological order, Moss weaves together archival footage and contemporary recordings through a non-linear narrative. By moving between different decades, the film highlights the contrast between the friends’ younger selves and their present-day perspectives, offering a thoughtful exploration of memory, personal growth, and what it means to grow older.
Moss directs and produces the documentary alongside Lisa Remington and Kristin Feeley, with Liz Gilbert Cohen serving as co-producer. The executive producing team includes Coen, McDormand, Tot Long, David Lewis, Shane Boris, Jeff Reichert, Geralyn White Dreyfous, Regina K. Scully, James Costa, and Trevor Burgess.
The Bend in the River is set to premiere on Netflix on December 4, 2026.
