We featured rhythm and blues vocal powerhouse Dipo on the INsiders Guide last week. His single “Ain’t No Love” caught the attention of myself and many of our followers. It was easy to get lost in the passion of Dipo’s sublime vocals throughout his new single, and the spine tingling track manged to awaken all senses. With this in mind I caught up with the talented R&B vocalist to talk all things music;
Hi Dipo and welcome to OLC! So for our readers out there tell me a bit about yourself and describe what kind of artist you are?
Thanks for having me, I’m a Canadian soul singer/songwriter, performer of Nigerian descent. I’m an old school music kind of artiste but I also like to move with the changing trends; hence, I try to infuse great sounds together without losing the original vibes.
Who are some artists growing up that inspired you to be a musician?
Those would be Stevie Wonder, Boys 2 Men, Al Green, Fela Kuti, Teddy Pendagras.
Did you have any formal vocal training?
Unfortunately not yet, trying to get a vocal coach now, especially since my voice is the only musical instrument I play.
How challenging was it for you as an artist to get discovered?
Being an independent artist is quite challenging, I have been at this for over 10 years now, and I’m only hoping I get “discovered” pretty soon.
Tell me about your latest video for the song “Ain’t No Love”, whats the song about and how did the idea for the video come about?
The song is basically saying that even though it’s important to have love in a relationship, love alone may not sustain the relationship. If a guy is a bum (lazy), things may not go well. It also expresses the fact that an artist could be struggling “underground” for some time, and until you “make it” you may be regarded as lazy, and no love for you. The song also says that even when you become successful and you have money, don’t forget to share with your “honey” that’s important.
What this song derived from a personal experience of yours?
Well, you can say that, because it applies to me as an artist, but when I was writing the song, I wasn’t even thinking about myself.
Do you have any plans for an EP release?
Yes I do, I plan to release my 5 song EP in April.
Who are some artists you would love to work with and why?
I would love to work with Alicia keys, H.E.R, I think they are both immensely talented and our styles will blend beautifully.
What does the rest of the year hold for you?
I’m looking forward to releasing my EP, take the music around the world on tour, and start working on my debut album.
