A prequel to the all time classic musical ‘Grease’ is in development, according to the Hollywood Reporter. John August, who wrote the film ‘Big Fish’ and worked on the forthcoming Aladdin live-action remake, is writing the script. The new movie is simply titled “Summer Loving” and tells the story of how troublesome greaser Danny Zuko (famously portrayed by John Travolta) first met Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton John). The title, of course, takes it name from the song ‘Summer Nights’ – which famously told of their first meeting. It’s believed that the movie will offer an in-depth look at this first encounter, which took place before the events of the movie at Rydell High School.
“Summer Loving” is in the beginning stages right now, so there are very little details known at this time. Paramount does not even have a script, just the idea but the studio has reportedly already begun feeling out who will play the iconic roles. ‘Grease’ has proved to be an enduring title for Paramount over the decades, with the songs continuing to be part of pop culture and the film being reissued in anniversary editions every few years (although a sequel made a few years after the original starring Michelle Pfeiffer never motored). In 2016, ‘Grease’ got the “live for TV” treatment on Fox in a version starring Julianne Hough and Vanessa Hudgens, which proved to be a hit, winning five Emmys in the process.
We can’t wait to see what’s on the horizon for “Summer Loving”.
