INsiders Guide: Jinkx & DeLa’s 2024 Tour, Rebecca Lappa, Grace Pettis, Claire London, W/FRNDS, Brother Valiant…

The greatest holiday show on Earth returns with another all-new production! Award-winning comedy icons, writers, actors and RuPaul’s Drag Race alumni BenDeLaCreme (she/her) and Jinkx Monsoon (she/her) are coming back to town with their wildly successful, internationally acclaimed, The Jinkx & DeLa Holiday Show (BenDeLaCreme Presents). Directed and produced by BenDeLaCreme, the 33-city tour will play 38 shows across the U.S. and Canada from November 7 – December 29 in major theaters. This follows last year’s historic 30-city run where the reigning “queens of Christmas” (Entertainment Weekly) sold out LA’s Dolby Theatre, NYC’s Kings Theatre and the London Palladium. Artist presale begins July 9 at 10am PT / 1pm ET (Code: HOHOHO), and tickets go on general sale July 12 at 10am PT / 1pm ET at JinkxandDeLa.com. VIP Packages, including photo opportunity and a Q&A with the stars, are only available to purchase separately at JinkxandDeLa.com with proof of ticket purchase.

This year’s holiday tour expands into new U.S. cities for the first time including Las Vegas, and notably the south in New Orleans, Houston, Charlotte, and Orlando.

Throughout the show’s 7-year history, Jinkx and DeLa have traveled through time a la ‘A Christmas Carol’ with a wacky multiversal twist, defeated AI overlords trying to replace them, battled it out to define the meaning of Christmas, got trapped in a meta world of their own creation through the lens of a Faustian nightmare, and explored post-Pandemic depression via a talking peppermint candy puppet. And that’s just a few of the show’s past plot lines. While there’s no guessing as to what wild and unexpected directions this year’s show will take audiences, fans can expect another year of over-the-top camp spectacle, side-splitting gags, brand new songs, heartfelt storytelling, thrilling dance numbers, and iconic costumes. Join the sugary, terminally delightful DeLa and the spicy bombastic Jinkx for an evening The New York Times says is “sure to lift your spirits and make you howl with laughter.”

This marks the dynamic duo’s 6th live holiday show production, following the massive success of five previous holiday tours, and a cult-classic holiday film (The Jinkx & DeLa Holiday Special in 2020). Since its inception, BenDeLaCreme and Monsoon have written a new holiday show every year and are the sole writers of the production–a major achievement for two drag artists who tour at this scale. With BenDeLaCreme in the producer and director’s chairs, the show is entirely helmed by the queens themselves, and has proven to be a “winter-time staple” (ELLE) that continues to get even bigger each year.

The 2023 iteration of The Jinkx & DeLa Holiday Show won the 2024 Queerty Award for “Best Live Theatre,” beating out productions on Broadway and the West End. The tour led to appearances on The Today Show and a profile featured on the cover of The New York Times Pop section. Gay Times hailed it as “undoubtedly their biggest – and best – production yet” and the show is praised for creating a safe haven for LGBTQ+ people by The Hollywood Reporter and Newsweek.

The Jinkx & DeLa Holiday Show is co-written and co-created by BenDeLaCreme and Jinkx Monsoon, directed by BenDeLaCreme, produced by BenDeLaCreme Presents (a company comprised of producers BenDeLaCreme, Kevin Heard, Gus Lanza, and Associate Producer Jin Moon). For tickets and more information, visit jinkxanddela.com.

Edmonton, Alberta’s Rebecca Lappa shows a tender side with her new ethereal pop single ‘Underneath Me’ out 14th June.

Having tackled past trauma with previous single ‘Deep Water’, Canadian musician Rebecca Lappa dives into something more sensual for her upcoming single ‘Underneath Me’. Imploring in the chorus, ‘I need you to come home now/Running with my arms out/We’ve spent way too long just making love over the phone now…’, the lyrics accompany an understated background of synths and minimal drums to allow Rebecca’s stunning vocals to take centre stage. The feeling of isolation is also gorgeously captured in the music video, as the singer-songwriter whiles away the hours in a rustic autumnal landscape. Watch here.

Rebecca Lappa: ‘I wrote “Underneath Me” about missing someone who is far away, wanting to feel their touch, and longing for the separation to be over.

Born in San Francisco but raised in Edmonton, Alberta, Rebecca has been singing since childhood and plays multiple instruments. After watching Taylor Swift open for Brad Paisley, she decided “That’s like me. I want to do that.” Rebecca subsequently went on to be nominated five times for the Canadian Folk Music Awards, winning young Performer of the Year in 2015. In 2019, Rebecca was nominated for three titles at the Edmonton Music Awards, taking home the win for Singer-Songwriter Recording of the Year. Among her previous releases are 2016’s Reckless Heart, 2017’s Spirit EP and 2019’s Unfiltered EP.

Last year saw Rebecca release her Tales of a Taurus EP, marking a stylistic change in direction for her music as she leaned into indie-pop territory in tracks such as the dreamy ‘Forecast’ and the warm sounds yet icy imagery of ‘Blue Lips’, gaining support from the likes of Atwood MagazineMusic-News, and Beats Per Minute. Upon its release, she made her debut UK appearances, which included her very first British show at The Strongroom in London and a set at The Great Escape, the latter earning praise from The Line of Best Fit for ‘packing punch after punch’.

Singer/songwriter Grace Pettis has released an optimistic third single “Joy” from her forthcoming sophomore album, Down To The Letter. The soulful song showcases Grace’s extensive vocal range, resulting in a beautiful delivery of her message. With “Joy” Grace has found a way to be positive after a heartbreaking divorce by appreciating the everyday things that we take for granted. Grace sings: “I got joy in a song I started to sing/Joy in the thought of everyday things//I got joy in the air, in and out of my lungs.” “Joy” premiered in Folk N Rock, who wrote : “‘Joy” is an amazing track from Grace that provides a sweet sound of solace and is a musical hug for your weary soul.

Garnering high praise for her stunningly soulful voice, Claire London is a powerhouse singer, songwriter, and artist who has captivated audiences with her rich sound and compelling songwriting. From her early days as a dark pop princess to a triumphant return to her soulful roots, Claire’s evolution as an artist has been as dynamic as her vocal range.

Now, embarking on a new chapter of her career, Claire is set to redefine genres with her upcoming EP, a fusion of blues, soul, and rock, crafted under the guidance of Grammy-winning producer Mitch Dane. Claire’s new EP drops June 2024 and is a powerful testament to her artistic growth and evolution. Claire’s music has also been featured in television and acclaimed films like The Girl on the Train and the indie thriller, Samson.

Beyond her musical endeavors, Claire plays a pivotal role in championing mothers within the music industry through her involvement with the Mamas in Music non-profit organization, and she is the creator and host of the Mamas in Music podcast, launched in 2022. From artists to industry executives, the podcast shines a spotlight on the inspiring stories and empowering voices of mothers in the music industry.

I’m W/FRNDS, a genre-blending DJ and producer who started making music in my late teens while pursuing a professional hockey career. After my former folk rock band took off on the festival scene, I followed my passion and began writing and producing music for other artists.

My new track, “GOING DOWN TOGETHER,” is what I’m calling Dance Country – think Dua Lipa meets country. Every sound and lyric was chosen to provide a heartwarming feeling that you get from country songs, and then blending that with a catchy beat you hear in your favourite pop records.

I always want to make carefree songs that people could lose themselves in and forget about everything else going on in the world. Sometimes the songs that connect the deepest are just that.

I hope that you enjoy the combination of musical influences and dance your hearts away.

Brother Valiant is an alternative folk-pop project spearheaded by singer-songwriter AJ Amsterdam. Inspired by folk legends new and old, from Paul Simon to Connor Oberst, Brother Valiant is a noble attempt to capture the magic that made these artists so iconic. After only a few shows, Brother Valiant released the singles “Little House” and “Devil” in 2015, along with a full-length LP “Thus, He Was” in the summer of 2016. His 2021 single “Lady Daisy” received widespread critical acclaim with Atwood Magazinecalling the song “a gripping folk sound that enchants listeners”.

Much of Brother Valiant’s sound brings together mental snapshots of living life between a big city and the sprawling suburbs; Riding through coastal beach towns that pave way into bustling city streets. The viscerally emotive, and oftentimes satirical lyricism, bite through a soundscape of anthemic choruses, jangly guitars and rambunctious horns. Themes of navigating feelings of anxiety, love, and fear through an adventurous spirit remain a hallmark of the songwriting, which bleed through with an authentic wit. Brother Valiant has played extensively throughout the East Coast, at such notable venues as The Iridium, Rockwood Music Hall, The Knitting Factory, City Winery, and The South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC).

Better Luck Next Time, the upcoming EP, is poised for release later this August. Leading single “C’est La Vie” is an intoxicating dreamy indie folk track chronicling trying to make big changes for someone you care about. “The premise of the song is accepting that deep down, to an extent, we are always going to have certain qualities and quirks that we cannot change about ourselves,” confides Brother Valiant.

With soul-stirring melodies, wistful acoustic guitars and a knack for storytelling, Brother Valiant is an important artist on the rise.

Toronto indie pop musician Lisa Humber shares her dreamy, introspective single/video ‘Dance Within’ out now on all digital streaming platforms. Listen here.

The second release in Lisa’s quadriptych of new music for 2024, ‘Dance Within’ was created with producer/guitarist Justin Abedin. Since their collaboration began in fall 2020, Justin has been key to Lisa’s musical journey, contributing to her debut EP The Space Between and recent single The Devil’s Advocate’. On ‘Dance Within,’ Lisa explores the idea of finding joy as an act of resistance in a world influenced by social media’s curated illusions.

“The song delves into the struggle between truth and fallacy, the pursuit of genuine answers, and the freedom of letting go,” says Lisa. “Amid the constant stream of thoughts, it emphasizes embracing positivity with ‘Feel good about feeling good’ and examines the true nature of happiness with ‘Joy is often misunderstood.’ ‘Dance Within’ encourages listeners to seek authentic joy and resist the pressures of comparison and perfection.”

For the ‘Dance Within’ music video, Lisa teamed up with long-time collaborator Stephen O’Connell, a director, choreographer, and dancer. Stephen, a fan of Lisa’s work with Justin, drew personal inspiration for the project. The video features dancer Sam Lore, whom Stephen met a decade ago at Rutgers University. They filmed at Highbridge in The Bronx, near the area where Stephen’s parents grew up and where he was born, and they shot the indoor scenes in his aunt Hilda’s Soho loft.

Says Lisa: “Stephen credits Sam for the choreography, which brings the video to life. While Stephen handled the drone shots, Sam’s movements perfectly captured the song’s essence. ‘Dance Within’ is a celebration of collaboration, personal history, and artistic expression, and I can’t wait for you to experience it.”

‘Dance Within’ is available now on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, and other digital retailers and streaming services worldwide. For more information, please visit lisahumber.com.

‘MLX’ stands out amongst the crowd, with the song’s dynamic production, highlighting Jazzi Bobbi’s skills as a producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. Her intricate layering of sounds and infectious rhythms are set to leave a lasting impression on the electro-pop scene.

Today’s release follows Jazzi Bobbi’s debut single, ‘Crush2‘, which launched her new artist project with a bang. ‘Crush2’ captivated audiences with its irresistible fusion of electronic beats, left-field pop sensibilities, and contemporary jazz instrumentals.

“Never trust a thought that didn’t come by walking,” said Nietzsche, and this most essential human function is also the star of Faux Real’s wild new anthem, “Walking Away From My Demons.” Musing on society’s obsession with moving forward, and lining it with an earnest undertone, brothers Virgil and Elliott interlace and interject: “Every step I take is leading me to another bad decision” – as if the unavoidable conclusion to this forced march was personal doom. The industrial sound palette echoes a perverse obsession with engineering feats made to propel us into a bright new era. In the accompanying video, Faux Real are angels in a concrete haven, counting their treadmill steps into oblivion/bliss. Their demonic counterparts whiz through a desolate LA wasteland on their Heelys™️, trying to corrupt those they encounter. Today’s video premiered on Consequence, where Faux Real share their inspirations behind the track for the Origins series.

“Ultimately, ‘Walking Away From My Demons’ reads as a glow-up,” says Faux Real. “One step at a time, away from negative patterns and into a gleaming paradise of confidence and ripping bass riffs.”

robbietheused – the sparkling new solo project from The Used frontman Bert McCracken – shared a new music video for his recent single “Just A Little Bit”. Created by Steven Hathaway (@babycryanimations), the video builds upon the contrast between the song’s restless, yet hopeful lyrics. Thrusting viewers into a scene akin to a mad tea party, the combination of horror elements such as skulls and zombies with bright colors and whimsical plants create a delightful and wacky world.

robbietheused released his debut single “Just A Little Bit” via Big Noise to kick off his new era with a bang. Produced by John Feldmann, the track showcases the familiar angst of robbietheused’s lyrics overlaid with a hesitant hope for brighter days, wrapped up in a synth-tinged pop groove that makes it impossible to stand still while listening.

“Just A Little Bit” is available to stream now at https://bignoise.ffm.to/jalb

It’s a song about living through turmoil of the world and seeing a bit of a bright future ahead, seeing the sun peek out of the clouds, seeing a mistake being fixed,” says robbietheused on the track. “It’s about having a little bit of hope.”

In general, robbietheused always finds solace in writing and recording new music because this creativity has a positive impact on his mental health. Having these songs were particularly vital, as he started writing during the COVID-19 pandemic when he was unable to travel from his home in Australia.

The whole vibe was really, really dark—and I was in a really, really dark place,” he says. “But recording pop music helped. Having a bunch of pop songs lifted my spirits quite a bit. And ‘Just A Little Bit’ was a bright moment in the record—seeing positive things for the future and hoping for the best.”

Two Trains Left is a pop-punk band hailing from Paris.

Their debut EP, “Sorry & Pathetic,” released in 2018, garnered significant attention and set the stage for the band’s future successes.

This initial triumph led them to open for notable acts such as Anti-FlagStory UntoldBetween You & Me, and Hockey Dad in Paris, as well as Møme on the main stage of the “24h de l’INSA” festival in Lyon.

The lockdowns of 2020 pushed 2TL to release three singles, spreading optimism to their fanbase while preparing for the future.

In the summer of 2021, they released their second EP, “As Safe As Yesterday,” which was met with acclaim from both the press and fans alike. This EP marked the beginning of a new era for the band, blending pop-punk with a softer vibe and introducing a fresh atmosphere to their sound.

The band revitalized “As Safe As Yesterday” by releasing a DELUXE version featuring their live session “Live in Marseille.”

With over a million streams, ASAY became the soundtrack for Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!’s French tour in 2022.

As die-hard fans of Huey Lewis and The News, they decided to release a cover of the iconic 80s hit “Stuck With You.”

This cover caught the attention of the legendary band, who even reposted it on social media.

In the spring of 2023, Two Trains Left embarked on a tour with the band Moonball (featuring members of Landmvrks), playing their single “Lack of Sleep” in Marseille, Lyon, and Paris.

They followed this with the release of their single “Feeling Fine.” By the end of 2023, 2TL released “Comfort Zone,” headlined a sold-out show in Lyon, performed at the first edition of Mvrksfest, and opened for Neck Deep in Paris during their latest EU tour.

Following “Alone,” they are set to release their next single, “Sail Away” featuring Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!, on June 21st.

SLEEPKIT is a band who can genuinely be described as mind-expanding; from the nucleus of their songwriting to the texturally-ornamented arrangements, they manage to imbue each aspect of their music with a sly veneer of otherness. Sprung from the minds of songwriters, singers & co-founders Ryan Bourne (Chad VanGaalen, Ghostkeeper, Plant City Band) and Marie Sulkowski (Texture Twins), SLEEPKIT’s repertoire showcases a band whose serious understanding of the pop song is buffered by beautifully detailed, texturally-ornamented arrangements and a penchant for the slightly skewed.

The seeds of SLEEPKIT were sown thanks to Ryan and Marie’s shared membership in fellow outer-limits-leaners Devonian Gardens, whose two albums allowed the two to find their patch of common ground. That band’s stylistically wide-ranging approach is largely eschewed in favour of SLEEPKIT’s more streamlined sound, one that reconciles their textural inventiveness and zoned playing techniques with the immediacy of dance music and their inherently approachable songs. They released their debut LP Champion Weekend in 2016, an amalgam of sunshiny dream-pop, post-disco and psychedelic synth-rock with shades of Giorgio Moroder to The Stooges to ELO.

Bolstered by the addition of drummer Eric Hamelin (Alvvays, Ghostkeeper) and multi-instrumentalist Joleen Toner (Crystal Eyes, Plant City Band), SLEEPKIT are back with Camp Emotion, a deeply-nuanced and emotionally unarmoured refinement of their singular brand of experimental pop. Produced by Scott ‘Monty’ Munro, a prolific producer and multi-instrumentalist known for his work with Preoccupations, Chad VanGaalen, Lab Coast, and Ghostkeeper, Camp Emotion actualizes their art-pop vision in a shimmering opus that explores the outer edges of song creation – functioning as well as a dancefloor soundtrack as it does a hazy, late-night headphone session through inner space.

prolific London DJ/producer and label boss Archie Hamilton releases his new single, “Daydream,” featuring Sadie Walker. The track, out now, marks Hamilton’s debut on Higher Ground.

Outfitted with jazzy breaks, an irresistible acid line, and Archie’s signature UK house groove, “Daydream” is uplifted by the hazy vocals of Sadie Walker, who’s also worked with other all-star acts such as Honey Dijon and Nightmares On Wax. The release is one of the first that came after Archie’s first conscious break from his career in nearly 15 years due to the birth of his first child this past September. In addition to embracing new emotional depth in all facets of his life, the time off allowed him to refresh his creative approach with a new focus on songwriting.

Daydream” is a return to a deeper sound for me and explores a more emotional side to my music. Collaborating with the incredible vocalist and writer Sadie Walker who also co-wrote my record on Defected, we felt there was more to explore together. Returning to the studio, we crafted something that really resonates with our shared vision. The result is a record that I am immensely proud of, and I hope people connect with it as much as I do.  — Archie Hamilton

rising London-based songstress Eden Rain returns with her brand new single ‘Palo Alto’. This blissful new offering from this hotly-tipped singer-songwriter takes the form of a delicate, introspective piano ballad which highlights the remarkable vocals and hypnotic sound which is quickly defining Eden as a standout emerging indie artist today. The song arrives with a beautifully crafted video, which you can see below.

Edmonton folk-roots musician Christin Hyshka shares his new album Rescue out now on all digital streaming platforms. Listen here.

To celebrate the launch of the album, Christin is also releasing ‘The River,’ the 3rd single from the LP. The rousing track tells a tale of redemption and loss that leaves the listener contemplating both.

“I read this tragic story sometime ago about a young girl living on the street, abusing drugs, no family and at some low point, she crosses a bridge over a river and thinks of jumping,” says Christin. “Thankfully, shortly after, some good people took her in and suddenly life had meaning again. The river in my song is a metaphor. On one hand, her old life was washed clean in the water, but the river had the potential to take that life as well. I tried to leave the interpretation of either scenario in this song open to the listener.”

Christin grew up in rural Manitoba listening to Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Steve Earle and was greatly influenced by the imagery that these artists depict through their songwriting. He now lives in Edmonton, Alberta, where he recorded his debut album, The First Word, in 2021 and his sophomore album Rescue, which has just been released. The nine songs on the new album all tell their own unique story of faith, joy, forgiveness, re-birth, regret, shame, desire, longing and creation. All facets of the human condition. Themes that both weigh us down and raise us up. It’s as emotional as it is powerful, filled with messages for the soul and the heart.

Yarin Glam is a pop, R&B artist from Los Angeles. Born and raised in Israel, Yarin’s Middle Eastern background shines through her music as she brings her authentic self into each project she pursues. Her music touches on topics including female empowerment, mental health and self-love, and is reminiscent of the likes of Rihanna, Lana Del Rey and Billie Eilish.

Her latest single “BLIND” delves into Yarin’s own experiences with certain individuals that didn’t have her best interests at heart. The songwriter shares, “BLIND is about the people who I thought were my friends but tried to influence me in a negative way and I was too naive to see at the time. I think everyone can interpret this song differently and take it to their own place.”

With ethereal synths and a pounding, punchy beat, “BLIND” showcases Yarin’s signature style and musical evolution, blending emotive lyrics with captivating melodies that explore themes of vulnerability and strength.

With the goal to create music for others to relate to and feel liberated by, Yarin’s songwriting acts as a reminder that we are not alone in life. She confides, “I’d say I write a lot about mental health, my struggles with it, the struggles of being a woman in this toxic society we have. I write about those subjects because I want others to know that they’re not alone in this.” Yarin has garnered over a million streams for her music, had the privilege of working with Grammy award-winning producers and toured the US and Canada with Emblem3. Having garnered acclaim from the likes of Wonderland Magazine, Earmilk, Atwood Magazine and many more, Yarin Glam is proving to be an artist on the rise.

DIM KELLY returns to Lee Burridge’s All Day I Dream imprint to release his three track Homily EP. On the heels of three acclaimed EPs released on the label – Nocturna Animal in 2021, Mangrove in 2022, and Pianologic in 2023, in 2024 DIM KELLY is back once again, delivering his signature melodic sensibilities that have become a consistent fixture of the All Day I Dream catalog. When DIM KELLY recently performed at the All Day I Dream of Summer Shimmer party at the Brooklyn Mirage on June 2, unreleased tracks played from the Homily EP created some of the most unforgettable moments of the show.

Influenced by genres such as classical, hip hop, and of course electronic, DIM KELLY’s diverse musical background is evident in the varied textures and moods of the Homily EP. In addition to his aforementioned releases on All Day I Dream, DIM KELLY has released electronic music under an impressive slew of labels, including Lee Burridge’s other imprint TRYBESof, Armada, and Reworck.

The Homily EP kicks off with its titular track, a standout from the body of work. ‘Homily’ is a seven and a half minute paragon, featuring a hauntingly beautiful vocal performance by fellow Belgian musician Mondingo, set against a backdrop of intricate melodies and lush soundscapes. From near the get go, we’re treated to Mondingo’s vocal performance, which creates a somber introduction to the track. As energy increases within the instrumental, a feeling of optimism builds, until a moment of peak euphoria around the five minute mark, as powerful synth stabs create a feeling of triumph. As elements of the ‘Homily’ instrumental are stripped back towards its conclusion, the emotional atmosphere of the track is now sanguine – a stark contrast from the track’s darker introduction.

Reflecting on the track, DIM KELLY explains: “As always, I try to convey emotions through my music. When I heard Mondingo’s voice two years ago, I was completely blown away by it. His voice has a depth and emotion that really touches me, so it was only natural that we did something together. I composed the music, sent it to him, and two days later, he sent back the vocals, which I loved. ‘Homily’ existed.”

Following the release of Homily, stay tuned for more details on DIM KELLY’s upcoming tour dates and additional releases.

ROSIN follows on from her beautiful new single Intention with an accompanying music video. Directed by Kynza K-J, shot by Arran Green and produced by Zoe Gunn and Abbey Valentina of Zee2Ayy productions, the stunning video adds a new dimension to the gorgeous audio.

Intention sees ROSIN share her innermost thoughts. Tender and alluring, the track is a stunning take on unrequited love. A self confessed romantic, ROSIN’s weightless vocals and honest songwriting embody the contrast of sweetness and a fragmenting dream.

Sharing more ROSIN explained: Intention is about feeling this closeness with someone in the moment but knowing that it won’t be more than that.

I found myself wondering how someone can create this intimacy with you, without feeling anything. Although some people might see it as a sad song, as it is about a love that is not reciprocated, I hope that the listener also recognises the beauty of having feelings for someone and how it makes you feel inspired.

I loved the song from the start, as it was so personal and really captured that feeling of a crush being so delicate.

Being able to capture those feelings visually and having a team of such talented people coming together to create the video, was truly magical. Working with one of my best friends and main collaborators Kynza K-J made the whole process feel so intimate.

As a daughter of two visual artists, ROSIN’s upbringing in Berlin was rich in creativity. In more recent years she relocated to London via Brighton to pursue her music career. This has seen her sound evolve into a style that is authentically her own. Her enchanting sound toes a line between folk and experimental pop moments with flecks of electronica.

Grammy-nominated artist Porter Robinson released the music video for the third single ‘Russian Roulette’ from his highly anticipated third studio album SMILE! 😀, releasing July 26th via MOM+POP. [Pre-order here]. The six-and-a-half minute song presents a departure from the album’s first two singles, laden with social commentary on the paradox of modern artistry, internet culture, and celebrity. The single is poised to be one of Porter’s most sincere and vulnerable songs to date, beginning to present the form of the full length – a record seemingly as up-tempo and accessible as it is shadowy, honest, and avant-garde.

“I’m always toying with and entertaining the idea of oblivion, of career suicide, of disappearing. In ‘Russian Roulette’, I’m trying to reconcile those fantasies against the real responsibilities that hang over me. And then it gets dark, and light all at the same time,” says Porter about the track.

The video for ‘Russian Roulette’ furthers the track’s mission by stitching together found-text sourced across social media comments and editorial content to present the lyrics through the mediums that they are examining. The result is a high-energy visual journey into the ethos of the artist.

Brooklyn-based songwriter Camille Schmidt just released her debut EP, Good Person. This collection of six songs was brought to life with the help of producer Phil Weinrobe, known for his work with Adrianne Lenker, Tomberlin, and Florist.

In May 2023, Schmidt, Weinrobe, and Schmidt’s band gathered at Weinrobe’s studio – Sugar Mountain – to record. Schmidt’s band features Brooklyn-based guitarist Sam Talmadge, drummer Pele Greenberg, and LA-based bassist Eli Heath. Weinrobe took a unique approach to the recording process: he instructed Schmidt not to share any songs with the band beforehand and even not to create a track list for the EP.

When they arrived at the studio, Schmidt played whichever song felt most present to her that day, choosing from a few hundred she’d written over the previous few years. The band began experimenting, and whenever they entered a flow state – or what Weinrobe referred to as “the pocket” – he would hit record without allowing them to listen back. In this way, the songs were recorded mostly live and over four days, maintaining the raw and authentic sound of the band playing these songs together in the studio. The result is an enthralling folk-drenched indie pop EP, chronicling the autobiographical experience the artist had with grappling with feelings of shame and perfectionism. She confides, “This EP is very much about struggle, about process – specifically the process of becoming. And looking back at all the things you’ve been through in your childhood, looking back on the different versions of yourself you’ve been in friendships and relationships, the different fake versions of self you’ve presented to the world (as well as looking directly at the f*cked up things happening in the world) and then sort of asking with a real honest earnest hope, is there something else? And then betting with your life that there is.”
Schmidt regularly performs with her band around NYC, and Good Person marks her first official release.

  • The debut album’s sci-fi philosophical title, ‘SPACE AGE COUNTRY GIRL‘, is almost symbolic of Agnes Hartwich’s way of embracing her claustrophobic upbringing in the suburbs with eternally escapistdreams that are far too big, complex and out-there for the cozy, normal teenage life in a quiet suburb.  Furthermore, a nod to a song lyric of one of her big teenage inspirations Arctic Monkeys.
  • Agnes explains “I’m a sucker for words and rhymes-for drama, sarcasm and a twinkle in the eye. But I have also gone deeper and more personal to work on this album. Therefore, the songs contain everything from a manic andobsessive self-confidence to galloping anxiety and an overwhelming loneliness, which has followed me mywhole life.”
  • The studio album is close collaboration with guitarist and producer, Nichlas Kure, and the Danish musician and songwriter, AlexVargas, who also produced the debut EP. “It’s not easy for me to be vulnerable towards others. But working with Nichlas and Alex, and the mutualtrust that we have shown each other, has meant that I have dared to open up about my ugliest sides and biggest sorrows, while at the same time I have been able tobe cocky beyond all limits and just have fun in the meantime!

Russian newcomer jjtsu has made his debut with ‘Beach’ out now via Dirtybird Records.

For his Dirtybird inauguration, jjtsu has delivered a vibrant, fast-paced groover that harnesses the spirited energy of Chicago and Detroit’s jackin’ house styles. ‘Beach’ thrives on rambunctiousness, building around a rhythmic loop of zany bleeps and blips over its near five minutes. Befitting the Dirtybird ethos, ‘Beach’ is a quirky minimal mover that will have the flock shaking their tail feathers.

The music lover from the suburbs of St. Petersburg took his first steps in music production using the Music 2000 aka MTV Music Generator software on Playstation One, recording “tracks” with his brother onto cassettes. While growing up, he attended a music school, studying the accordion. From 2004 to 2007, he traveled across Europe and neighboring countries as part of an orchestra. At the same time, he became fascinated with pumping house and Russian hardbass, attempting to recreate it with his friends. Around 2007-2008, he heard Claude VonStroke’s ‘Who’s Afraid of Detroit’, which had a significant influence on him. From that moment on, he began to explore house and techno sounds, which eventually led him to Dirtybird.

Today’s release is the latter, seeing the band unfold yet another of the endless layers of loving someone — Stream / Watch the visualizer.

“Surprise, surprise, another flor love song,” says vocalist Zach Grace. “It’s a good thing love has so many facets to discover and explore or else I wouldn’t have anything to write about. I love the imagery of being connected by a link, invisible or otherwise, to the person who is made for you. How every life and every timeline couldn’t separate you from the person you are meant to be with. It’s a comforting thought to me.”

Now entering a new chapter, OSKA continues to mesmerize listeners with her latest release, “Forever Blue”. Inspired by a car ride she took with a childhood friend where they played their favorite songs for hours one day before New Year‘s Eve, she shares, “It felt like being children again; playing, goofing around, snoozing off in the car; not a worry in the world. This song is about reflecting on tough situations and realizations, like childhood ending. It’s also about friendship and the beauty of having people in your life who can make you feel at peace by something as simple as listening to music together.”

“Forever Blue” exudes a warmth and glow through jangly guitars, celestial harmonies and upbeat percussion that you can’t help but move to. Setting the scene of a summer road trip, OSKA exudes a renewed sense of excitement as she reminds us to find solace in the little things in life that bring us joy. Madeline Hawthorne’s new album Tales From Late Nights & Long Drives is out everywhere today. The new collection of songs was produced by the famed Ryan Hadlock (Zach Bryan, The Lumineers, Vance Joy) and recorded at Bear Creek Studios near Seattle, WA. Ahead of the release, Hawthorne shared the songs “Night Ride,” “Where Did I Go Wrong,” “Neon Wasteland” and “Chasing The Moon” The album has garnered attention from outlets like MAGNETRelixAmericana HighwaysBozeman Magazine and more.

“This is my record coming out of the pandemic, stepping onto the stage with more miles under my boots. This collection of songs is the result of taking a leap of faith to branch out on my own and give everything I have to a career as a songwriter and performer. It is moments from the pandemic that would in turn shape me into the woman and artist that I am today. It is stepping away from the process that I used to write my album Boots, giving into the moment and the melody to tell a story. The album is me, but not fully. It is like 11 different versions of me; a woman I could have been, a woman that I have perhaps thought I was, and a woman that I hope to be someday. I hope listeners enjoy the journey. Play it in your car this summer while going on your own adventures. Spin that vinyl in your favorite listening room, or blast that record on 11 in your kitchen and dance around the house. Thanks for listening.” – Madeline

rising American, Ibiza-based house/techno star, Airrica, who has been making noise around the globe this past year with releases on Diplo’s Higher Ground, B2B sets with TSHA, performances at Tomorrowland, Fabric, and more, releases her debut solo EP. Hi Speed Lover, out now on Damian Lazarus’s Crosstown Rebels label, features remixes from boundary-pushing DJ/producer Nick Morgan and hotly-tipped talent KinAhau.

Bumping and trippy, “Hi Speed Lover” is a snaking, bass-heavy cut loaded with energy as warped vocals are accompanied by slinking drums, icy hats, and resonant chords and strings, while Nick Morgan’s take brings a stylish, hazy glow to the track as dubby low-ends and delicate keys work amongst the mix. The second original, “Cherries,” is another impactful production merging metallic drums with further vocal murmurs and an infectious acid-dipped bassline, while KinAhau’s remix strips things back to deliver a classy journey through rich textures with an ethereal trip to close the package.

My inspiration for these tracks came from the pure fun of getting lost on the dance floor; specifically those moments where the whole room is bouncing along joyfully. I love those moments where a break strips back, a sassy vocal takes the spotlight, and you can feel the energy of the night building upwards. ‘Hi Speed Lover’ features the fierce voice of Jazz Alonso whilst I experimented with my own vocals on Cherries.”      — Airrica

rising Afropop star Oxlade returns with a new track and music video “ARABAMBI” – listen here.

Over the lush, airy instrumental, Oxlade wields his blend of Afrobeats, R&B, and pop as he yearns for his lover to stay by his side and give him her love forever. This track marks the final phase before his debut album Oxlade From Africa, which is set be released this fall.

About the track, Oxlade says “ARABAMBI means ‘the child of the people,’ ‘the community gave birth to this child,’ ‘the one.’ It’s also the nickname of K1 De Ultimate, an iconic Nigerian Fuji musician. The melody is inspired by the American singer Miguel and the way he uses his vocals. It’s a love song but it’s still me in my braggadocious elements. It is the original song I was meant to perform for COLORSxSTUDIOS before I swapped it for ‘Ku Lo Sa.’”

The track comes together with a music video which radiates heat, both in its visual appeal and the palpable energy it exudes, encapsulating the essence of the track’s hot, vibrant celebration of rhythm. The picturesque video finds Oxlade and his lady traveling to the tropics to bask in each other’s presence among the stunning scenery – watch it here.

Created from the vision of guitarist/producer Ramsey Elkholy, Monotronic combines his love for music with his inspiration from other cultures. Much of these influences are a result of his extensive travels throughout India and Southeast Asia. Spending two years backpacking throughout the world and studying Indian music in Calcutta, he later returned to Southeast Asia as a graduate student and lived among the Orang Rimba tribe in the rainforests of Sumatra, Indonesia for 2 years. Living this “collective” mode of life where the group is valued over the individual and everything is shared is an idea that Elkholy brings to Monotronic, where every musician is encouraged to bring their own creativity to produce truly “collective” music.

According to Elkholy, “Monotronic is a concept, whereby each instrument can be heard as a continuation of the other and the music sounds as one distinct whole, emanating from a single source.” Elkholy takes a hands-on approach, producing both the music and videos for Monotronic. The band’s work, specifically the singles “Kids of Summer” and “Buy Yourself a Dream”, have garnered radio play and both songs premiered at #1 on VEVO’s Incoming Indie playlist.

On the upcoming  “Sun Song”,  Elkholy reflects, “I had been playing the opening guitar riff on the sofa for many months without any lyrics or concept. I think I was riffing on Nirvana’s ‘All Apologies’ initially, which then morphed into something else. And then one morning before heading to the studio I played the riff and out came ‘I don’t want to lose a minute of sleep, lying in bed and wondering what could have been.’ At  that point I knew I had a concept and the song kinda took off from there. We tracked most of the instrumental that day and the lyrics were finished about a week later. The song kinda wrote itself… and the outro lyric ‘waiting for you’ actually became the title of the record.”

Stay tuned as Monotronic releases more material throughout 2024 leading up to their new LP Waiting for You! The future looks bright indeed!

Ways In Waves is the brainchild of Brian Raine, a multi-instrumentalist and music producer living out of Edmonton, Alberta. Originally hailing from Yellowknife, NT, Raine began playing music when he was four years old, and it became his singular focus before moving down to Alberta to study music at MacEwan University. There, he began developing the project that would eventually become Ways In Waves. With malleable form and the spirit of experimentation at its core, the group began as a live duo, and eventually expanded to a five piece live band with Raine picking up vocals as well as guitar and keys parts.

The first record “Bloodless Arches” (2019) was entirely self-produced by Raine and performed by himself and the drummer from the live band. As a whole, the album was conceptualized as an experience that takes the listener through the paces of making it through a bad day. At first it focuses on personal experiences, but zooms out toward the end of the track list. This conceptual writing in the lyrics was reflected in the production elements as well, placing each song in a specific physical space where the story of the lyrics existed.

With the latest releases – including the singles “Who in War” and “Everything Taken” – Raine chose to focus the sound of the project into a tighter, brighter, more aggressive sound. Combining aspects of rock, art-pop, and electronic music together into a mixture that propels the listener through controlled chaos. With drums engineered by Quinn Cyrankiewicz of Royal Tusk and performed by Joel Joeske of Whale & The Wolf, these songs are explosive and driven while maintaining an ethereal backdrop.

The Edmonton Arts Council has  supported the production of all visuals for the upcoming album, including music videos by Keenan Kirk (aka kidpixel), Molly Little (animator at Sticks & Stones), Tatiana Zagorac (aka Talltale), and Mike Guthrie-Plouffe. The next single “Ovum Nova” will be released on May 30th 2024, with a music video created by Keenan Kirk. The full album will be out in September 2024.
